Re: Correct weight gear lube ?
No. Owners manual calls for SAE 140 in summer and SAE 90. Trouble is that the old SAE oil is no longer available. There has been a lot of discussion here about which oil to use. Here's a good start on the conversation.
I use STALUBE 140 GL4 in both trans and rear end. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...ansmission+oil The current thinking is that you don't want to use any gear oil in the transmission that has additives that corrode "yellow metal" like the synchros in the transmission. These gear oils are usually GL-5. Last edited by 19Fordy; 08-01-2017 at 09:32 AM. |

Re: Correct weight gear lube ?
Modern gear lubes can be purchased in multiple grades such as 85w - 140. The "w" stands for winter grade. So best of both worlds. GL4 or GL5 are both ok for rear axle use. The GL4 is a good choice if you want to use the same lube in the transmission.

If you're not in a compete hurry, try Amazon.com. The last time I looked, it was $10 less than NAPA with free shipping. I just checked it, and they still have the same deal.

Re: Correct weight gear lube ?
You can order straight 90 wt EP especially made for older vehicles from Rural King.
I used it in a transmission I recently built and its a lot quieter than the multi wt stuff and also seems to shift better. https://www.ruralking.com/?q=rural+k...alking.com%2F= |

Re: Correct weight gear lube ?
Dont forget if its a GL5 spec EP Gear Oil the additives are not too kind to the syncro rings in the gear box.
Just replaced some GL5 EP gear oil with a Classic Golden Film Oil from Morris of UK. A GL1 spec oil. Any way the oil I drained out had a gold tinge to it as this was the EP GL5 gear oil. Correct oil is cheap compared to g/box parts. Phil NZ |

Re: Correct weight gear lube ?
I'm with tubman .... Amazon less expensive and free shipping. Last purchase they had Stalub in different viscosities and types. I use 140 in banjo and 90 in tranny for better shifting in winter.

Re: Correct weight gear lube ?
I purchased MasterPro GL4 140 from Orielly's for my 39 transmission and it foamed, not a little but major foaming. Called VanPelt about the problem. Ended up having to get that junk out of the trans and bought Sta Lube Gl4 from VanPelt. I think it ran about $16/qt and takes something less than 2 qts. No problems, no foaming
