Default Car trailer size

Would a 14 foot open car trailer work good for a '31 fordor?

Yes, that would be the smallest you could go. I hope you have a 4 wheeled trailer, and not just 2 wheels.

It's a duel axle, I can get it for a good price.
Just want to confirm it would safely carry my A.

Thanks Tom

I would suggest that you go for an 18' trailer. You may not need the 18' for the Model A, but if you have the 14', at some point you may wish that it was longer and you'll be kicking yourself.

You are fine with it - I have a 14' that fits my 26 T and my A like a glove and tracks really nice to boot.

Difference being that nobody wanted a 14' trailer and it cost me less than half of a comparable 18' used at the time ($650 vs. $1800)

I'd love an 18' enclosed, but it's really hard to justify...

I have a 16' tandem. The 31 Tudor just does fit. Wish it was dovetailed.

Check with the local police in your area. In Michigan,n it must be 30 inches from front bumper to front of trailer and 24 inches on rear. Obviously too short for Michigan. Wayne

A rolling chassis will just barely fit on a 10' open trailer. That's with the front bumper handing over the front bulkhead and the rear tires tied down at the very edge of the deck. I know this because ... well, I'm ashamed to admit how I know.

A 131" AA frame will fit on a 14ft aluminum boat trailer hanging off the ends a bit for anyone who wanted to know cheap and easy way to transport to the sandblasters

Lightbulb Re: Car trailer size

You can't just consider the size of the trailer.

Look at the manufacturer sticker to see what the GVWR is
and what the actual cargo weight rating is.

If there is no sticker - look at the axles.

Most trailers that size have 3500 pound axles.

You need to deduct the empty trailer weight from the axle(s)
rating to determine payload capacity.

Always have a use trailer inspected by a competent & qualified
trailer repar facility.

You could have flattened axles - frame cracks - bad wheel bearings
and other issues ...

Katy:
I believe you have a strong and valid point, although a 14 footer would work with my A (2475 lbs), I don't think it would quite carry my '57 Chevy (3350 lbs) if needed.
I don't need two trailers when getting one of a proper size would take care of all my needs.
I also hate kicking myself

It's always good to know that a 14 footer will carry a Model A.

Thanks all

It's $700, don't know if I want to go through the hassle.

Can't loose at only $700, unless it's really a mess.

For $700 you can haul firewood or garbage to the dump. Don't sweat $700 dollars. Wayne

I now have an 18ft tilt bed trailer with a wench, but moved two Model A's, a 1911 EMF & a 37 Chevy from So. Calif. to Wa. State 39 yrs. ago with a trailer that had two 12ft steel runners & was classified as a 12ft trailer. 12Ft is 144", the WB on a Model A 103" & 155" overall lenth. There was very little overhang in the rear. It was a double axle with brakes. It towed so nice didn't even know it was back there. I brought several other Model A's home & trailered to several meets with that trailer. I sold it to a guy who was using it for his Model A for $600.

How do you like the tilt beds vs standard flatbed when hauling cars vs other things?

I have a 16' open car hauler that has carried my 31 Coupe, '28 Pickup and speedster all over the south and southwest. They all fit just fine. In fact I am preparing to cut my 16' down to 13 ' in order to lowere weight slightly. with my new truck every ounce will help.

The '28 pickup from front bumper to rear bumper (yes, my '28 PU has a rear bumper of sorts) is 13' 2". 'le Coupe measures 12' 10". A fordor may be an inch or two longer. Anybody that cannot fit that length on a open carhauler has no business pulling any kind of trailer.

Oh! the trailer is a twin 3500 lb axel (7000 total) with wood deck. Rear axel has electric brake. Wheel dia is 15".
