Drive shaft welding considerations?
Getting ready to shorten my solid 42 D/S, are there any special considerations (besides cooling slowly) when welding coupler on or machining new splines ?.
what is the metal composition of D/S ? thk/s gus. |

The steel will be a medium to high carbon steel, make the coupling a close fit, on the shafts. Preheat until the machined metal, turns, at least blue, no hotter than black.
Don't slow cool it, let come down to room temp, in still air. If you slow cool it, it will make it softer and less able to with stand the torque. If your going to machine splines, you would heat it red and pack it, in something to slow cool it (I use at litter) that will anneal it (softest state) for machining but, then you need to heat treat it. Or find a shop that will be willing to re-cut the splines with carbide end mills. Frank |
