NOS Ford '40 Standard grille.
A retired friend, not a computer or Fordbarn guy has an NOS grille that I would like to buy from him. I want to pay him a fair price for it, but have no idea what it's worth. Would Dennis Carpenter NOS be a good source to ask that question ? Thank you Fordbarners.

Carpenter's NOS prices are usually quite high and do not necessarily reflect the market. Hopefully KUBE will chime in. He is pretty much up on '40 stuff.

Re: NOS Ford '40 Standard grille.
A complete NOS 40 standard grille should be worth almost as much as a repo. I've seen NOS grilles on here (just the two halves and not the center) for $400. Actually most NOS stuff sells for more than repo stuff. There's a couple of broken ones on e-Bay right now and they have bids of near $200. If I had a NOS grille and someone offered me one half of retail of a repo the buyer would definitely be starting off on the wrong foot.

Re: NOS Ford '40 Standard grille.
Let your friend be in control of the price. Lets say you have determined that the going price range is $400 to $500. Tell him that. Ask him what he wants from you. Be prepared to pay the "going" price. They aren't growing on trees, and he's let you be first in line to buy it.
Having said that, if it was me and we were long time friends, i'd be selling it to you for a reduced price. Or if you had always been there for him with a helping hand....or given him needed parts for his projects, the grill could be real cheap or free. Like many things, it all depends....

Re: NOS Ford '40 Standard grille.
I too think the Mac comments are appropriate. The only thing I would add is to be sure the grill is REALLY a NOS FORD grill. The repops have been around for awhile and it is possible the owner doesn't even realize it is not original Ford parts.

Re: NOS Ford '40 Standard grille.
Make sure it has a Ford part # on it, just to be sure it's genuine. An extra bonus will be if the chrome is not pitted. Otherwise , it will need to be replated. If the seller is a friend, pay what he wants or don't buy it.. Good friendships are not worth
"Chiseling down" the price. |

Re: NOS Ford '40 Standard grille.
19Fordy, some of the repos also have the part# on them, so it's no guarantee that it is an original item.

Re: NOS Ford '40 Standard grille.
TJ: Good point. I wonder if there are any other "Genuine" ID characteristics - perhaps like, FoMoCo, or the Ford logo.

19Fordy, not sure about grilles, but many NOS parts do have the oval Ford logo.

Re: NOS Ford '40 Standard grille.
I have a couple of NOS 40 std grilles (spares that came with my coupe purchased in 1957 by the previous owner) and will look them over and describe what markings are on them.
I think most of the Drake castings have his name on there somewhere. I know the Deluxe one does. |

Re: NOS Ford '40 Standard grille.
If I remember correctly, the first Drake standard repos had all the Ford numbers and insignias on them. The way to tell them apart was the repos didn't have any ejector pin flash on them because the tooling was new.

Re: NOS Ford '40 Standard grille.
Deuce, Please do post the photos. I just removed the 40 DeLuxe grille that I bought from Drake when he first started making them in the 70's and I can't find any "Drake markings" on it. Wonder what's up with that.

Re: NOS Ford '40 Standard grille.
It has to do with being licensed by FORD to make the reproduction part these days.

Re: NOS Ford '40 Standard grille.
I have tried and failed to insert or add a picture to a post. I have uploaded the 40 std grille pictures to a public album in my account area, I think anyone can access my pictures by clicking on my avatar. Hope so.
