Default why so tall...

Cleaning up the garage after cleaning up the driveway (snow), and for what ever reason noticed the different oil fill/breathers I had acquired recently.

The first two pictured are taller, approx. 5" and the last two pictured are approx. 1 3/4" just would like to know application for the taller ones.

The shorter ones are on a 39 mercury and my 39 P/U 59AB any input would be great.

I have seen the long ones on the flatheads with the front top mount distributor engines. Gary

The taller or longer filler pipe is 33-34, also the straight backside of the base is an indicator of 33-34. 33-34 cap is a short cap that slips down inside the filler neck. The cap shown is 35 and later. JMHO

The 33 oil filler tube went into the intake manifold so neither is 33, but just the steel fill tube may be the same length as the 33. The straight back design of the fuel pump adaptor makes both of your tall oil fillers Early 34, later in 34 the fuel pump adaptor had a hump on the rear of the adaptor. The hump back design was carried over to 35 but the steel filler tube was only a couple of inches tall.
The reason they are so tall is they have multiple oil baffles inside. In 35 the baffle tube was under the fuel pump adaptor and a separate part from the adaptor. The short steel tube on top of the fuel pump adaptor in 35 did not have baffles The baffles help prevent oil vapor from exiting the valley area of the engine. The longer tube also made it much easier to refill oil into the engine and around the radiator steady rods.

Thanks Terry, that explains the Stromberg Model 40 that is in the second picture. I thought those were specific to 34's as well. Scott

Hey Scott. I like that oil pressure guage with shut off lever. Do you have one inside of cab also? Walt

Looks like you have monitoring under control! Nice wiring upgrade as well.
