Default 1936 WOOD SEAT FRAME; WOOD STAIN or PAINT

Hi Barners,

The wood is all done. Now, is the seat frames for my 1936 Ford Club Cabriolet PAINTED with reduced Black oil based paint or STAINED with reduced Black stain? How much ( percent) is it reduced?
Thanks,
Bruce/CT

Your wood seat frame is covered by upholstery. I would not treat any wood covered by upholstery with an oil product. To my knowledge these frames were bare wood when covered at the factory.

The original wood frame on my '36 3w's seat is unpainted wood.

I believe the wood that came with my car was original and it has some sort of black finish. That is the reason I asked the question.

I have used some black paint stain from Roy Naciwiecz (sp?) for my 37 floor boards. Don't know if it would be appropriate for your 36 seat wood...

Some seat frames are natural and some are painted or stained, especially open car. My Cabriolets were painted so first I stained, after the stain dried, I then spray painted flat black. Paint and Poly as well as most finishes do not deeply penetrate wood, stain does. I wanted to add some protection from moisture, especially under the frame.

Ah, stupid me. I should have thought of Roy.
I've already written him. He should have been my first thought.
Thank you everyone for your input.

Originally, the wood was dipped in a mixture of old (used) oils (to describe it simply) to offer some bit of preservative. That gave the wood that blackened appearance you describe.
I use Minwax Ebony stain - two coats, to replicate the authentic appearance.
