Default Steering sector gasket needed?

Is there supposed to be a gasket between the steering sector housing and the steering housing on a '31 two-tooth steering gear?

I have a round cork gasket. There is also a thrust washer but I don't know which way you put it.

Wide, flared, end towards the box.

I used a rubber oring in mine when it was last apart, ---I had restored the car 10 years before using the cork,it had shrunk and wasn't doing the job ---now 25+ years on the rubber --- wet inside not outside,

Look at the surface of the main (worm) housing where the sector housing meets the main housing. There is a recess where the cork/paper gasket ring lies and seals to the sector housing.
