54 Lincoln guys...
I have a chance to buy a decent 54 Lincoln hardtop, but I'm more of a pre-war Ford guy. So I have no experience with 50's Lincolns. I know that the Lincoln Y-block is totally different than a Ford Y-block, but what about the rest of the drive train? Are transmissions, u-joints, brake shoes/drums, wheel cylinders, wheel bearings and the other usual rebuild parts the same as Ford? Or is Lincoln all on it's own? Thanks for your help.

Trans is different from a Ford, and I imagine that the rest is also different.

If the trans is an auto, its a four speed Hydramatic. The parts are available. Look up the racing history, its pretty interesting.

Re: 54 Lincoln guys...
I'd be surprised if there were one interchangeable part with the Fords. Linc's and Merc's had heavier axles, springs, larger wheel bearings, brakes, etc. The Linc's had a Y-block but it is completely different from the Fords. Transmission is probably a 4-spd hydra, not a Ford-O-Matic. No interchangeable body or interior parts. To my knowledge, there's very few repro parts available for the '50's Linc's aside from drivetrain rebuild kits.

That's my biggest concern about the car - the availability of parts. It woulda been nice if they were the same as Ford. Thanks for all the replys.

Re: 54 Lincoln guys...
I don't know how well structured the Lincoln car club is as far as offering repair parts or services. Maybe they offer none at all other than members knowledge of other sources for what you might need. Other than that, the only other source I know of for parts is E-Pay. Yuck !
There are TONS of sources for parts and services for the old Fords and the Ford Y-blocks are still very popular among many Ford enthusiasts, as well as the old "mileage-maker I-block sixes. You can get just about anything you need for an old Ford. If you could find decent parts for an old Linc, they'd most likely be very high priced compared to the Ford parts. Its a shame. Those old '52 - '55 Lincoln Cosmo's and Capri's were the best looking cars to come out of the '50's IMO. |

Re: 54 Lincoln guys...

Re: 54 Lincoln guys...
the brake drums are larger than a Ford. Know this as I pulled a pair for a friend at a salvage yard some years ago.
