Thoroughly inspect All of the front components for wear or damage before assuming steering slop is the fault of a specific component. Especially if the car has original power assisted steering, it's partially a result of the way the system was designed.

Lares supplies and rebuilds steering components. I'm sure there are other places as well.

My PS equipped '55 used to wander a lot. I assumed it was the steering box and bought a replacement. Turned out the steering box was fine but the idler arm bushings were shot.

My 55 crown with automatic also has a lot of play at the wheel which makes it a bit nasty to drive..Someone told me to loosen the nut on top of steering box and try adjusting set screw to take up some slack but upon looking there is no nut with a set screw just2 nuts with one being larger than the other...So where does that leave me now?? Thank you/..

There's a member on the HAMB, NealinCA that rebuilds older model Ford boxes. He might rebuild later ones as well. I've never used him but he seems to have a good rep over on the HAMB.

Cool Re: 55 fairlane steering box

What dmsfrr said ^^^!
Make sure the sloppiness isn't a result of worn steering/suspension components before determining it's the steering box. Disconnect the drag link from the pitman arm, block the pitman arm and then see if there's lots of slop in the steering wheel. The box is fairly simple. A couple of worm gears, roller bearings, needle bearings and an oil seal. A rebuild kit is expensive.....

My '54 sat in a field for 20 years but all I had to do to was clean and inspect and replace the oil seal. Filled it with John Deere cornhead grease and it's good to go!
