Dougs 1939 Ford project at Bubbas
My friend Doug traded a Dodge Dart for a very complete 1939 Ford and we drove to Madison Wisconsin to haul er home yesterday.
Damn it, diesel is expensive ! Remember when you could go anywhere for $100 bucks , not anymore !!! Our goal with this car is to make it run from the bottom up, cosmetics can come later. Just make it run , with brakes and working clutch etc. We do have a new flathead on the stand but lets see what this one sounds like first. Was a pleasant surprize to see behind the hub caps was still painted and not very rusty. Story is this was in a barn for many years. Stay tuned as we tackle this project. Anyone got and 600x16 tires for sale ( cheap) , will probable blast the wheels than paint and get some rubber on it first as we go????? Any one want to help ?? |

Yes! That is a very complete car. Great car for restoration. I like the plan to just get it driving before anything else. Keep us posted on the progression.

WOW! Traded a dart for a 39 ford! I don't know your friend Doug but that has to be one of his best moves (trades) ever.
Bubba, keep us posted on your progress. That car looks fantastic. I wish I could run into trades like that. |

Re: Dougs 1939 Ford project at Bubbas
Spent some time with Doug today and we have come up with a very basic plan step one and two.
Step one= Test fire up the engine , install a battery pull the plugs, add some oil to the spark plug holes , turn engine over and check compression. Assuming it has some compression then change out the distributor and plug wires etc with new stuff. Clean plugs and remove carb top and check insides etc. Check all aspects of the engine etc. oil water radiator??????? Step two: Remove entire front axle assembly, check king pins, alignment, tie rods and brakes . Repair as needed and reinstall........ Stay tuned videos and pics as we go..........be a couple days...... |

Doug, I have 5 600/16 Firestones, plus tubes, that you can have for free if you pay shipping and cost to dismount. Send me a PM.

Re: Dougs 1939 Ford project at Bubbas
Ok got started on phase one today. I had sprayed a complete can of jb blaster everywhere on the car including the engine etc.
So with a "bubba" approach we unloaded the car and started phase one (will hit it again sat) our mission is to drive this car and make it functional on a no budjet approach. We removed the spark plugs and clean them with our plug blaster we use in Newport. They now are dry and look good. Installed a new battery ( 12 volt) turned the key on and spun the engine. wow not only did it turn over very smooth , the dash shows oil pressure on the gauge and using the thumb on each plug hole compression is very good and even ( thats what my helper Walt said rbg :>) ) . A quick test showed no power to the distributor and we hot wired it (positive ground) with no change. A quick look see and off the distributor came. WOW some body has done some serious work on this unit and it actuslly taught me a couple things ( i try to learn something new every day) The timing had been advanced to the limit and then pinned into location with a cotter pin , pics show this cotter pin. Also the vac piston had been removed and the inside advance was ground on in a few spts to add some advance as well. I placed the unit on a tester and it was misfiring all over the place (multi lights ) Not wishing to do anything but make it run i cleaned the points in my ultra sonic tank , not much wear on the contacts and filed them to reinstall. I might add here that ever connection was poor and offered a poor connection. So i blasted the condensor, tested it on a machine and blasted all connections and re ran unit on the machine. Adjusted and cleaned unit works very well on the machine now.. I also tested the coil while off the distributor and it also tests well with good output. Stay tuned as we will reinstall the distributor and wires ( may use the old ones just for grins) and start working on the fuel system sat morning. And just for the record the horn shown in another post works very well , kinda spooky pushing the horn button and hearing the old Ford horn. I think Doug has her named Maybelliene???? I will call it Mabel??? |
