Default 8BA oddity

Just got an 8BA built and was cranking it to check oil pressure. No pressure and then I noticed oil running out of the bellhousing. Now what the H--- did I do wrong? Well I removed the flywheel and there was a 1/8 pipe thread hole in the block behind the oil distribution tube. Has anyone else ever seen this?

Yes, I've see it. The first 8BA came out on the 48 pickup. They had that hole in the back so they could drill a little 1/16 hole through the fuel pump hole into then main oil line to lube the push because they did not use a pump bushing. The next year they used a pump bushing with a little hole in it lined up with the main oil line so they didn,t need that hole in the back. Just put a 1/8in. pipe plug on that hole and you'll be all set. Walt

Yep, I've got it plugged off. Just had never seen it before. Thanks for the info, something new all the time.

Is this different from the gallery plug at the back of the block that blocks off the main oil tube that runs down the center of the valley?

The earlier engines had that plug. Normally the 8BA only has a plug in the front of the block.

This one has no bushing but it has a rather large drilled hole. The pump rod has to be in or you get zero oil pressure.

All the 8BA's I've had apart had the plug, including the EAB that's in my truck.

Edit -- I take that back, I just found a picture of a '50 Car block I have and it doesn't have it.

That's not where the hole is in my block. It is above the cam drive cover and and deeper in the block. I don't think that picture you have is of an 8BA. Believe it is an earlier engine..
