Default How were blocks originally machined; 1st cut etc.

Does anyone know how A & B blocks were originally machined when they were new? Were the pan rails done first to establish a data point for the X,Y,Z measurements, then the cam bearing holes so the crank center line could be bored in the new babbit? I am trying to figure out what constants to use when measuring up the cranks centerline and the blocks top surface that needs to be decked. thanks
