Default Manifold gasket

If you are using the asbestos with steel gasket do you have to also install the gland rings? I heard there is no need if you are using the copper clad gasket. Do all manifolds need to be surfaced(milled) before installing, even if it looks straight?

if both manifolds are new resurfacing is not necessary. if only one is new or both are old yes mill them...i use gland rings whenever possible and always use the copper gaskets

I have had good luck with the steel waffle gaskets, very reliable, the copper gaskets not so much. The gland rings should be used whenever possible to preserve exhaust manifold alignment.

I had a set from Back Order Vintage that lasted from Pennsylvania home after the copper composition gaskets failed there...

Hi 29,

Bratton's copper manifold gaskets with his new intake/exhaust manifold & new gland rings assemble & fit together like a complete integrated set.

They have been great for the past 6 years, and should last very long because these are quality parts.

Quality conscious Model A Parts Suppliers like Bert's, Bratton's, and Snyder's, who strive to provide only the very best are usually the key to obtaining quality Model A parts.

FWIW: For the $6.00 extra, from a quality source, in a very humid climate, copper will always outlast steel -- in a very dry, arid climate, steel will last as long as copper as long as the mice & rats don't hike up & wet it.

Minerva had some pitting/burn out at the rear port on the HEAD surface, probably from someone running too long with a leaking gasket! I used that High Temp Exhaust Sealer & ALL was well! That's GOOD STUFF. I also put a smear of it on BOTH sides of the gasket, around the port openings. I ALWAYS use COPPER gaskets!
ALSO, after aligning the pipe flange to the manifold, I stuck in the supplied connector pipe, ran a bead of the sealer inside the flare, & let it "set" up overnight, before starting it up. Re- tightened the clamp a couple of times, after putting some miles on it. NEVER had a leak after that. Be SURE to buy the BEST quality pipe clamp, you can FUSS around with an OLD clamp, or a CHEEP clamp, FOREVER, trying to get it to seal well!!! The clamp I used was constructed HEAVIER & was apparently "POWDER" coated with a high heat paint??

I would use the copper gaskets, no glands, and have the manifolds machined as a unit (bolted together).

your better off using the 31 style copper gaskets that can be removed without taking the manifolds off

gland rings help prevent manifold droop and aligns the ports perfectly

Hey 1929,
If you have equipment/knowledge to check/measure for proper alignment of both manifolds...when bolted together...you can answer your own question ! However, if do not, I'd have them checked/surfaced...even if NEW ! Why? Read all the stuff written here and otherwise regarding repro new parts, then make a decision, after considering all the $/time you've invested.

Regarding 'gland rings'. I don't use them anymore, so I improve good breathing , a little, by porting these areas out. But, that's just me.

GOOD move, Kid,
If using OLD manifolds, just make sure the rings are NOT too thick & won't allow the gaskets to be SQUEEZED TIGHT!!

Has anyone used the copper gaskets with the built in glands?

No, M.C, but they look like an O.K. setup, especially if you don't have ANY rings. Dave, on his "TUDOR FROM HELL", RUNS ONLY 3 RINGS! While he wuz fiddling around trying to get # 4 in, he dropped it & it "disappeared"! After firing it off, he concluded it fell in the OPEN exhaust pipe! He's gotten to enjoy the NEAT sound it makes!
