Rear Brake Lining Wear
What do you make of this?
I did a brake job last winter and decide to check my work. I removed the REAR drums yesterday and noticed that I’m getting some real nice even wear on the driver side. On the passenger side I saw something unexpected. It’s worn fairly evenly along half of the lining. Not the left half or right half but the front half, away from the backing plate. The attached picture is not my lining. I tried to mock up an image as an example. The area highlighted in black somewhat illustrates my wear pattern. I'll try to take a real picture. Thanks Leo Last edited by spinelll; 03-12-2015 at 02:03 PM. |

Re: Rear Brake Lining Wear
That indicates to me that the drum is not square inside to outside. It may need to be turned to flatten it out, which should result in even wear.

Re: Rear Brake Lining Wear
Or maybe the backing plate is bent?

Re: Rear Brake Lining Wear
Both shoes ? Or just the leading or trailing ?
I'm wondering about a backing plate, shoe or hardware issue. |

Re: Rear Brake Lining Wear
Here's a better shot. Forget the EBrake.
Also, the bottom lining looks good. |

Re: Rear Brake Lining Wear
when you did the brakes what did that consist of? spelling out what procedures were followed and what was actually done will help immensly. How did the previous shoe wear before the brake job?

Re: Rear Brake Lining Wear
Dudley has it correct in that the shoe is likely bent or the shaft holes are too large.

I don't recall anything special about the old lining. As far as what I did, in no special order:

Re: Rear Brake Lining Wear
The Brake drum may be "Bell Mouthed" from being thin or overheated. It looks like the outer area of the Drum to Shoe contact is less than the inner areas near the hub.
If the drums were checked with a Drum Micrometer and were in size and not out of round or Bell Mouthed then I would think the shoe is bent slightly. Maybe someone in it's past beat down hard on the shoe to install the rivets and bent the shoe.

Re: Rear Brake Lining Wear
In the event the issue is the backing plate, will applying a straight edge to the back of the plate reveal anything or are we taking about very small inconsistencies?
Also, please excuse the overuse of the passive voice. |

Re: Rear Brake Lining Wear
Is it possible to remove a rear top shoe by just disconnecting the EBrake band and leaving the rest of the carrier.

When you wrote,.."I arced the shoes". Was that done in a machine? Or was it done with a body grinder? I still think the shoe is bent, tho....or not sitting square too the backing plate. |

It was done in a machine similar to the picture.

Re: Rear Brake Lining Wear
While it could be a number of things, bent shoe, egged out holes in the shoe, bent backing plate, bent or worn adjuster wedges,I think the simplest things are the most likely.Bent shoe or egged out holes.Swap the bottom shoe for the top shoe and drive it.Then see if your wear pattern changed or stayed the same.If the shoe on the top then wears as the first one did,it will point to a bent adjuster, bent backing plate,or a bent adjuster housing. That housing can have the holes wallowed out by somebody prying a adjuster wedge out of there with a bar.If the top shoe then wears normally, and the lower one keeps wearing as it did when still on the top it kind of points to a shoe problem.

Judging by the location of the chalk line it looks dark in places on both sides instead of just all on one. The picture is not real clear on my computer screen but the wear doesn't really look that odd to me. Does the car stop well? |
