Low mileage popout (sticks sometimes)- Should I rebuild?
My Sept 28 Tudor still has the original popout (less than 60,000 miles).
It usually works fine, but occasionally it sticks and doesn't pop out. Is there anything I can do, to assure that it pops out all the time? Or should I just have it rebuilt? My popout has the thick bracket that bolts to one of the head studs. Will that bracket fit through the junction box opening and up through the gas tank wiring chamber? It looks like I will at least have to remove some of the wiring to make it fit through the junction box opening. Thanks, Neil |

The housings are made of "pot metal" or rather die cast zinc. Be careful of what you use to lube it as it may cause damage to the housing.

Mike,
Thank you for the advice. Could I just squirt some graffite power on the pop out part? Neil |

Dick Crabtree in South Dakota services them. Quick service, reasonable price. Good guy to deal with. Look him up on forum.

You can disassemble and just send the cylinder to him. That makes it much easier.

Re: Low mileage popout (sticks sometimes)- Should I rebuild?
DO NOT use WD-40 on the potmetal. I would give it a shot of Loc-Ease (sp?). I couldn't find that product at the time, but my 99 Olds column switch was getting very stiff this past winter, and a squirt of powdered graphite fixed it right up. My tumblers were stiff for the key to push up.
If the Loc-Ease doesn't help, then send it to one of the lock guys. |

Re: Low mileage popout (sticks sometimes)- Should I rebuild?
I had problems with my pop out. When I turned the key, the pop out popped out but the car wouldn't start. I replaced it with a keyed switch from Mike's I haven't had a problem since installing the new switch.
