Usps
Some time ago, there was a thread about your preferred method of shipping parts. I posted about a problem I had had with USPS. A parcel was sent by the same sender on 11th August from Phoenix Az. Here it is the 17th and the parcel is here. That's 5 days by the time we allow for the time difference. That's wonderful service!
When it arrived, I checked the USPS website tracking facility and found that it hadn't yet arrived in LA for international departure. (Tracking number is LZ320260816US). Maybe USPS has worked out how to have something in 2 places at the same time. If so, can I volunteer? I see great opportunities.

Re: Usps
Nice that it's there...
... funny that they don't know where it is! (not unusual though!)

Re: Usps
Some time back I sent a small flat-rate parcel from Alaska to the UK. As I recall, it took about a week to get there, as acknowledged by the recipient. The USPS tracking still showed it "in transit" in Los Angeles for another month.

Re: Usps
In the defense of the USPS, they do state that they can not guarantee the location status, AFTER it leaves the USA. The foreign post offices do not have them in their computer systems.

Re: Usps
USPS service is uneven at best. Their tracking system has never worked, and don't ever try to make a damage or loss claim. But when it works, it works cery well. You just can't predict when that will be. BTW, my local mail carrier is ace!

Re: Usps
All the tracking depends on humans. Some to arrange the package so scanners can read it, some to actually scan the package. Some are diligent, some just don't care, some are just waiting for time to pass to retire.

Re: Usps
I had a first class letter that required a signature by the receiver ( me ) sent from New York to Alaska. it usually only takes 3-4 days to get a letter. this thing took 22 days. and when I called the post office all they could tell me was that was enroute from white plains N.Y. . well I knew that from the tracking # the next day I contacted the national complaint office ( not sure of the correct name anymore ) and guess what the local postmaster called me and said the letter was in anchorage and would be delivered the next day. funny though I had tracked it to a post office some place in Oregon that morning. I think it was just misplaced. the mail service in my local post office is the pitts, and it is not the postal service , it is the employees. have had other problems with them over the years. caught them lying about returning mail saying that I had no mail receptacle there. been renting the same mail box since 2007

Re: Usps
Mike, I can't argue with any of that. Seems in this case, some of them were slack (the scanners) while others were exceptional.

Re: Usps
Imagine a person going to every address in the USA six days a week, picking up and delivering mail and packages. Then transporting picked up items all over the world. now imagine a business that is willing to do that for 49 cents for 2oz, and 7.95 for small Packages more for larger items and for delivery outside the country. I'm amazed anything gets anywhere in a month.

Re: Usps

Re: Usps
Yet again USPS (and Canada Post) have come through for me. A package from Santa Ana CA arrived this morning in four days. BONUS: No onerous 'brokerage fees' and other add on fees as charged by the rip-off artists known as couriers.

Re: Usps
I too have had good luck with USPS. As mentioned above, the flat rate boxes are great! With standard shipping, I have had faster delivery with USPS than FedEx or UPS. Also, I have had no issues with the USPS tracking although I have not had any international shipments. That has been my experience but it may not be the same for everybody.

Re: Usps
I hate to say it, but I worked for the US Postal Service for 30 years. You can't beat private enterprise for cutting edge competitive technology. The Gov't management (not just U.S., but ANY country) are bureaucrats and have no real motivation to compete. The worker bees work very hard, but upper management hasn't a freekin' clue about competition or business sense. The US Postal Service (USPS) has the worst tracking known to man. I am now a shipping clerk for a manufacturer, as a working-retiree. We prefer FedEX and the tracking is phenomenal. Chuck

Re: Usps
I have had great luck with the Flat Rate First Class Mailing boxes. I even had one package, mailed from Florida to Hawaii and the guy got it on the THIRD day. I guess that it flew from Florida, direct.
I have had great service with their tracking, too. I do understand that making claims, with the Post Office, is a nightmare, but never had to. MIKE (mikeburch) |

USPS is great as long as they don't open your mail....
