Re: F@#$ing Shackles
I use the driver tool sold by the suppliers ... works great.for 10.00.it also works with other bushings, rear brake and camshaft etc... i get the pre reamed bushings...
Yes there are other methods, bolts and nuts, take your pick....usually a new spring comes with them installed Last edited by Mitch//pa; 02-16-2017 at 02:10 PM. |

Re: F@#$ing Shackles
I just use a long bolt or all-thread a couple of washers and nuts to pull
the bushing in. Bob |

Re: F@#$ing Shackles
THanks, the new spring has a bushing in it so do I need the silver one that came with the shackle with it or without?

30CC....I like fire! I'll give it a shot.
Mitch...I do have that tool you mentioned. Just slide the shackle bushing over and hammer? I foresee a order for shackle sleeves. LOL |

Re: F@#$ing Shackles
Oil on the outside of the bushing helps it slide into place.

Re: F@#$ing Shackles
Got it in the freezer...I've run the vendor tool in and out from both sides. It is getting more loose. The shackle is just a frog hair too big.

Re: F@#$ing Shackles
On mine I had to ream out the bushings once I pressed them in. Didnt take much just a quick ream in a drill , blew the debris out, then greased up the shackles and slid em in.

Re: F@#$ing Shackles
The last set that I bought from Bratton's about 15 years ago, I bought the shackle set plus the separate bushings. The separate bushings and the shackle together fit perfectly with no reaming.

Re: F@#$ing Shackles
Maybe just me but this knock off stuff from vendors is questionable. Having a problem as well getting holes lined up flush for pin on cam and service brake leaver. Lever is flush with top of Cam but holes are off.....

Re: F@#$ing Shackles
Are you using these "replacement" type shackles in the "New Parts" section of Bratton's cattle dog?

Re: F@#$ing Shackles
I'm not trying to belittle you in any way. But the perch bushings are usually pretty easy to assemble. In the last thirty or forty years, the bushings no longer need reaming with a drill. I have a drill, it's a 14.5 MM and it's for sale. If you're having a lot lot trouble, you may have the wrong parts.

Re: F@#$ing Shackles
Terry...no harm here. All I am saying is the silver bushing on shackle will not go into the perch. The originals to several days to get out as they were rusted to a solid bond. They are correct for the year but bushing is too large. I have seen this problem on here and HAMB so it does happen. I'll see how the Brattons fit. I bought these early on before I knew quality vendors. Let's just say its one of the really big ones. There could lie the problem as well.
Updraught..The shackles are not from Brattons but the replacement bushings will be. I like the slit through the length that will give it some give. |

Re: F@#$ing Shackles
Are there different size bushings for different year Model A's, or do you mean different size for cars newer than Model A's?
