Re: SAN FERNADO - BURBANK 1940s
Great video. Those were the start of good days and a good life after the end of WW II.
Would be neat to show a side by side video of the same "ride" on those same streets today. |

Re: SAN FERNADO - BURBANK 1940s
Very nice video ! Must have been the very late 40's. I saw at least one '49 Ford and Chevy.

Yes, I noticed the smog. It really burned your eyes back then. And that's an authentic Hot Rod if there ever was one: @ 48 seconds in, a Model A with motorcycle fenders and wannabe Cord pipes out the hood sides!

Re: SAN FERNADO - BURBANK 1940s
Very interesting video. At 4:30 a '49 or '50 Nash stops, then goes through the intersection. Then at about 6:32 did anyone notice the guy pushing the car down the street? It appears to be a '35 or '36 Ford but not sure. It goes by in seconds.

Just before the pushed car ('35 Ford with missing RF fender), can anyone identify the odd looking bus going round the corner @ 6.24?

Re: SAN FERNADO - BURBANK 1940s
Yes. very interesting. I watched the last part at half speed to better see the parked cars etc. There is front camera and rear camera footage and the rear camera is shown first.
You see the big truck stopped half way across the road in the rear shot then you see the truck pulling out in front of the camera car in the next sequence. The part with the two cars swerving appears to have been caused by the camera car playing chicken with the two other cars. Very poor driving. I enjoyed it very much, thanks for posting. |

I Grew Up In That Town!
Stock shots. About 2/3 of the footage was shot in Burbank, probably about '49'. They seem to have made laps from different directions around Columbia Studio Ranch on Hollywood Way. My studio sense tells me that either Warner Bros. or Columbia produced it. The studio film library used street footage as cuts for cheap shows, largely before TV became big business. As I took the "ride", I could call the Burbank streets, watching closely if I'd see my old home. The opening scene was clearly a movie ranch, but not Columbia ranch. Some of the street scenes were staged with screen extras walking before the camera. I saved this clip to see again. Good for me. Thanks: Fred A

Re: SAN FERNADO - BURBANK 1940s
I enjoyed the film very much. Most of those people are gone now I guess. I will watch again and enjoy it again. Would like to see more films like that. Thanks very much

Re: SAN FERNADO - BURBANK 1940s
I like those old driving videos even more now that they are colourized. From the same channel I spotted my favourite Mercury (52) at the 1:40 mark. A mercomatic too but different script than mine. (Automatic)

Re: SAN FERNADO - BURBANK 1940s
Thank you so much for posting this. I think I saw three trucks total. All big trycks. I guess nobody drove a pickup around there. The last thing they wanted to look like was a 'hayseed' or gasp, an 'Okie'. I'd go with Merle Haggard on that one.

This Merc has a paper new car plate from a dealer. Don't recall exactly when CA stopped issuing those plates but they were in use in '66 when I moved to SoCal. CA started using temporary paper plates for new cars again a year or so ago.

Re: SAN FERNADO - BURBANK 1940s
Very Cool but the camera man must have been a a bit of a "clown"..some piss poor driving on his part. I paused the frames often to look at all the cars. Before the "world went mad". Strange to think that all those people are likely dead now.

Re: SAN FERNADO - BURBANK 1940s
Some of the comments under the video suggest that this was shot as background video for movies and that near miss close to the end of the video was staged. Notice a police officer present to control traffic for the stunt.
