rear hub bearings
I want to replace the rear wheel bearings in my coupe with the 36/48 bearings , I have some new old stock ford bearings but I can't find the sleeves by themselves to install in the hub , I see the axle stub sleeves but no hub sleeves just by themselves .

Re: rear hub bearings
The bearing stub races on the model A are smaller diameter. The wheel hubs follow the larger size bearing. Several things can be done to make the smaller bearings fit but it would most likely affect other things as well.
Correction: It's the bearing that's smaller. The A & B used the large bearing with no sleeves in the hub. Last edited by rotorwrench; 07-28-2023 at 02:47 PM. |

Re: rear hub bearings
I haven’t found a source for the hub sleeve races by themselves. The bearings that come with those races don’t hold up and I wouldn’t use them.I found now v8 bearings on eBay and am using them.Dennis

Re: rear hub bearings
I converted those bearings to modern roller bearings. No problems since.

Re: rear hub bearings
It'll go for pages but I'll do it since I have been asked. Stay tuned I'll have to find it.

Re: rear hub bearings
Try calling around. Websites might only list the kit with the bearings but the vendors might be willing to sell just the sleeve. NOS bearings are the way to go unless you want to use Synchro's method.

Re: rear hub bearings
I think Snyder's has the sleeves. At least they aren't marked as out of stock. They are listed under the wheel hub category.

Re: rear hub bearings
36 was the year the small bearing started, the hub had a sleeve that was replaceable that can be used

Re: rear hub bearings
I see what the OP is trying to accomplish now. The 1936 & later banjo hubs used the smaller 68 series bearings and the 68-1236-A bearing sleeve. They also had a protective washer that fit under the sleeve to prevent the bearing from wearing against the hub. I'm not sure if the hub needs work to fit the sleeve or if the protective plate would fit since I just found good hubs to replace the OEM model A ones and used model B large bearings to repair my old worn out ones.
Those 68-1236-A sleeves should be available. |

Re: rear hub bearings
I finally found the wheel bearing races for the hub, Snyders carry them when available , the part number is A-1115-RK2, The Price IS 44.95 EACH. Just thought I would pass this along, Now I am wondering if the washers are necessary for the model a hub ? I cant find a listing for the washers/thrust spacers.

While I do not currently have a wheel bearing problem I would certainly consider a modern alternative when I do have to replace the old original style bearings. Your write up would certainly be (have been?) a good guide when that time comes. |

Re: rear hub bearings
BEWARE that SOME if NOT MOST FORD spare parts " specialists"/vendors selling these inner race /sleeves as "USA made".In my/our experience unless you can find, locate&source N.O.S. FORD/BOWER/HYATT/RBC Sydners &others will be either chinese or indian made!.FWIW/IMHO i'd go the way of using modern metric machined needle roller bearings&inner race instead of the antiquated wound journal roller bearing kind&type.I DON'T understand WHY FORD would design ,engineer&use wound journal roller bearings where just about EVERYBODY ELSE was using tapered roller bearings!!!!!..... SMH .

Re: rear hub bearings
The wound roller bearings from Hyatt are actually "shock absorbing" roller bearings. I saw this described in a Hyatt catalog at work. When hitting a load the rollers would move axially, thus limiting excessive contact stress. The added benefit is the slot in the helix applies lubricant across the race.
