1936 Ford 1.5 ton 4 speed Transmission jumps out of 4th gear
Hi, I have a 1936 Ford 1.5 ton truck with a 4 speed transmission that jumps out of 4th gear under a load. Anyone with gears or good 4 speed willing to sell please respond.

I can’t respond or pm anyone in the swap meet area because I’m a new member and need 10 posts to do anything like that.

Contact VanPelt Sales. Mac is the guru for all things early Ford transmissions.

Re: 1936 Ford 1.5 ton 4 speed Transmission jumps out of 4th gear
Mac VanPelt has many good replacement parts. Often jumping out of gear is due to either the transmission is only marginally in the gear or the gear has too much end play. You may want to remove the top and inspect to see if the shift lever is moving the shift rods into their detent positions and the detent spring and balls hold the rods in place properly. For the car the 36 syncro hub is supposed to move freely on the main shaft and will sometimes stick in one position preventing the syncro sleeve from entering a gear all the way.

Welcome aboard! It's really helpful to know where you are located. That way if another member is close they can possibly help. If you're anywhere near Oregon I have a couple of four speeds that could use a new home. |

For sure let us know your location. We have a stash of transmissions at my parents house.

Thanks! Located in Branchville NJ. Near the very top of New Jersey which is still beautiful with lots of farmland, some dairy farms still in operation. Great roads for a 40 mph 1.5 ton truck.

Re: 1936 Ford 1.5 ton 4 speed Transmission jumps out of 4th gear
Thanks for the welcome! Tell you a bit about the truck. It was originally purchased by the town of Montclair, NJ in 1936. You can still see the lettering behind the current lettering. Then at some point the man whose name is on the truck now bought it and used it up until the mid seventies for his landscaping business in Montclair. A friend of mine bought it from the family and he drove it once and decided to pull the motor because he felt it was “tired”. He stored the motor in the dump body of the truck. After 22 years of him doing nothing with it I asked him if he wanted to sell. I wound up purchasing it and had the flathead V8 totally rebuilt. Installed the motor and been having fun with it since. Not going to restore or paint it, leaving it “as is” as its very solid and has the look I love! I got ahold of the family that has the name of the guy currently on the door and that was their Grandfather and remembered riding in it when they where kids. Told them if I ever want to sell they would be the first ones I call. They seemed very excited about that. I have posted an album of pictures in the community section. I will post a couple of pictures here when I find out how.

Look at the tip of the shifter cane. It should be bulb shaped, if not, it may not be moving shifter fork far enough. Also, check the forks themselves for excessive wear.

Man, since you've already posted pictures in your album, you're already 9/10 of the way there as far as posting pics on the forum. From your album, I can post each of your pics with EIGHT clicks of the mouse.....about six or seven seconds EACH. DD . |

Re: 1936 Ford 1.5 ton 4 speed Transmission jumps out of 4th gear
Cool good ole truck! A bit off subject (Just curious) but still on the Early Ford truck 4 speed. Is there a way to up the gearing especially on the granny 1st gear but all gearing really, to make for comfortable use in a passenger car or PU? Probly not as I’ve never seen a post on it? Also are they like the 3 speed w non synchro 1st & the rest w synchro’s?
