Default gas (fuel) canister, period correct

Hi Barners,

i did a 100 mile trip on friday again and after nearly running out of fuel (again), a thought crossed my mind. I would like some spare fuel on my Fordor slant windshield, but not a plastic one and none, that i have to keep in front of my back seats. I would a canister outside of the car, but it has to look like it was made for it. I know that there are canisters for Model Ts, which live on the running boards, but i don't think those are okay for an A...

Any ideas, suggestions or hints?

What's causing you to run out of fuel in 100 miles? Are you 'sticking' the tank or reading the gauge? A 31 tank has 11 U.S. gallon capacity.

Never saw that before. 12x18.6x18.6 will fit on running board. A little pricey but it was built for gas and made of stainless.

Saddle tanks are available for Model A's. They fit under the splash shields so are not visible. This could double your gasoline capacity. They are used for hot rods but could be used for stock cars too. I am considering gutting my cowl tank to install air conditioning that will not intrude on my foot room. A major problem is that the original mechanical brakes cannot be used because there is no room for the rods.

See https://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/p...rod/prd117.htm

You should get at least 16 mpg (160 miles on a tank full) with your Model A. A higher compression head will help. The ignition timing and carburetor setting have to be right. It also depends on how you drive and what your finial rear end ratio is.

Thanks, guys and gals.

Those saddle tanks look nice, but i want to keep my brakes more or less original, so they are out...

And the military style gas canisters are great, but where do you put them? On the running boards, but you lose one door, don't you?

I get around 13mpg but i am nowhere finished. Ignition/Distributor is on the list, the overhauled carburettor is also on the list. The list is still very long... I only own her since january...

The one shown in post #4 is also available in 10 litre size. Maybe you can find similar locally?

I have thought of hiding a tank in the trunk or under the car. Then use an electric fuel pump to refill the cowl tank while driving.

I remember seeing a vintage gas, water, oil can holder that looked like a tool box mounted to a running board. I thought it would be a good product today with metal box and plastic containers.

If you are looking to keep it era, then you need a "Boyco Service Unit" to clamp to your running board. Here is an era flier showing what was available for the Ford Model A:

Note that some of them were made with a specific height so that the doors would clear them when opened.

Service units and individual cans for running boards use to be fairly common
on eBay. I collected more then a few years ago off the ..'Bay. Take a look you might find something.

You need some friends in New Zealand. This running board can & holder is very common down there.

This looks like a neat idea. I don't want the box on the rear of the car because i think it destroys the perfect lines of the car (edsel will be rotating in his grave) but i could make myself some fasteners on the rear bumper mountings for a canister.

Food for thought...

I would try and put them at the back of the car by the side of the spare wheel.
