Question Mounting of Spare Wheels in 32 - 35 Fords

As I look at early Ford V8's at Shows & advertised for sale, it amazes me how many Spare Wheels are mounted incorrectly on these early model Fords with the Wire Wheels. When Henry made these cars, the Spares were always mounted in the same position, with the Valve located at the top. This applies to Rear Mounted Spares as well as Side Mounted Spares. The reason for this, is that if the Valve was at the bottom, water would sit in the hole where the Valve protrudes, & over time, this would cause rust & eventually enlarge the Valve Hole. With the Valve located at the top, the hole is protected.
Furthermore, as this is the correct position to mount a Spare, Henry even added a small Drain Hole on the Inside near the mounting Hole for the Stud that is opposite the valve. Should water happen to enter behind the Hubcap, with the Valve at the top, the Water will drain out of this Hole.
I wonder if Judges at the various Car Shows deduct points when the Spare Wheel is mounted with the Valve in the incorrect position?
I mentioned this fact about the Drain Hole on the inside of 32-35 Ford Wire Wheels to a friend who has a 1929 Hudson when I saw that his Side Mount Spare Wheel was mounted with the Valve at the bottom. He saw the sense of having the Valve at the Top & immediately set out to move the Spare to the correct position. To our amazement, this old Hudson had a Drain Hole opposite the Valve, so old Henry may not have been the one to "invent" this feature? What do our readers think? Is everyone aware of this little Drain Hole in the back of these 32-35 Ford Wires.

I am aware of the hole in the wheel, and its purpose, however I never noticed it is on the same side as the valve stem. I'll have to check that out.

We usually look for this when judging '35 Fords at EFV-8 Club meets. Also, according to the more experienced judges I have worked with at meets/shows, the valve cap on the spare is the only place a valve stem type removeal cap as allowed. The other four wheels should have the plain type valve caps.

We may want to take into consideration that many of the owners of there fine vehicles do not live in areas when this could be a concern. Or keep there vehicles garaged.
As for me this is not a big problem in California, even tough my 1938 Ford spare is in the trunk.
Thanks for the information. Mark

This is why i don't see myself going for high point awards. 90% of owners when new would never have bothered to put the spare on correctly.
