DNLs1930,
I do like and use a product like Water Wetter in my Model A and my '40 Ford for added protection in our brutal Texas summer heat. I think it does help, although this summer's heat wave was a real test of my cooling system After reading all. the above posts, I'm thinking I might just go with a new 2 blade fan instead of a shroud. While I'm at it, I'm going to clean the radiator too. Since my REXACO temp gauge gave me the impression that the temperature was in the DANGER zone, I'm now suspicious of the accuracy of my gauge since it never boiled over.

The two blade should be good to go that's what I run and had/have no issues except the overheating inside the car... so the driving was limited to early AM home usually before it got too hot but there were a few ok A LOT of days that were just too hot to even think about driving...
I do have an aftermarket 2" temp gauge just to keep a closer eye on the temps and how I can tell you the temp never exceeded 180.

I picked up an aluminum fan today and plan to install it soon.

The very early brass cars had thermosyphoning cooling system and inadequate fans. As a young lad I had a friend with an Overland who drove in parades. The slow speeds of parades did not provide enough air flow through the radiator. He mounted a second radiator under the car with an electric fan to add to the cooling so that his engine would not burn up. I cannot remember the details so don't ask.

I have driven all across the U S without engine pans and a two blade fan, but I do have a good radiator , I can change water pump on side of the road, try that wit a four or six blade!

Maybe a dumb question, but what is an engine pan, where do they mount and what is the purpose?
Thank you

Mine came with a 4 blade steel fan installed. In 90*f weather, with the car fully warmed up, if you sat and idled for a few minutes the temp gauge would read ~175*F. I ended up replacing it with the 6 blade fan because the 4 blade had a little wobble to it. Didn't seem like it was well balanced, it was probably a cheap reproduction one installed decades ago by the previous owner.

Under the same condition (90*f weather, warmed up and idle for a few), it sits right at 165*f. Hottest I ever drove it so far was 101*f and it never got above 175*f. That and the engine seemed to run smoother since the plastic fan is a lot lighter than the steel ones.

Engine pans are stamped sheet metal panels that fill the gap on either side between the engine and the frame. Engine pans improve cooling airflow and keep the engine bay clear of road dust and debris.
