Bead blasting 33 hood
I had the hood of my 33 bead blasted and epoxied, labor was $750, materials $345. I thought that was rather high. What say you all?

Re: Bead blasting 33 hood
If that included polishing, then it's not unreasonable.

Re: Bead blasting 33 hood
Bead blasting both sides of a hinged hood that has louvers on the side panels is time consuming for a quality job. Cleaning the hood before priming it takes a while as does putting on the primer plus shop time to dry and clean the gun. I do not know what brand epoxy used, but some of them are pricier than others. Some bead blasting setups recycle/reuse the beads, and some do not. Shop labor these days can easily be $100/hr. I would be a little iffy on the materials cost, but then I don't know what type of media used or the brand of primer.

Re: Bead blasting 33 hood
If you are / were concerned about the cost, why didn't you ask for an estimate before the work was done ?

Re: Bead blasting 33 hood
The hood is probably the highest in man hours per square inch due to all the louvers and including the inside.

Re: Bead blasting 33 hood
Do my eyes deceive me or did they actually not remove the hood latch handle and paint everything together?

Re: Bead blasting 33 hood
Sounds about right. Doing a complete hood requires a lot of time, especially the louvers.
Wander why the latch wasn't removed. |

Re: Bead blasting 33 hood
So what I think I am looking at is a hood that was blasted to bare metal, etched, and has a coat of catalyzed primer sealer on it? Still to be done is build primer, blocking, maybe more build primer and blocking to get to final color? It looks like it is in DP 90 or a tinted primer sealer of another make by the sheen. Was the hood perfect or did the metal need to be worked before the primer sealer? I have painted only 1 34, my sedan delivery I had years ago, and it IS a ton of work. I am not a professional but have had reasonable success. Good work takes a LOT of time and the pros get things done faster, even with those long louvers. I don't think the total $ is unreasonable to get it to this stage.

Lots of factors go into this. In my area, your material cost would be the going rate for sandblast and epoxy prime. Labor and materials. $350. I recently had a car hood and roof for a Nissan sprayed in two stage, base/clear. Lots of masking since they were on the car. Nice materials used on $500k Porsches. I paid $1k. |

Re: Bead blasting 33 hood
Blasting done wrong ie at high pressure to save time will destroy your hood. Low pressure = good job = lots of time = lots of money -Karl

Karl, I agree 100%. Talking with the person afterwards gave me a great education, he did a fabulous job. He explained the principles of heat and air pressure.
