Default 1947 Trunk Handle Broke

I'm pretty sure this is a repo handle assembly. It has been tight to turn as long as I've had the car (it was unlocked). The other day the handle popped off as I was trying to open the trunk. Any idea how the handle is attached? Don't see any obvious breakage. Is it just a pressed fit. Is the original different? I'm guessing if I remove the brass lock slider and use a large flat screwdriver, I'll be able to open the trunk?
