1955 Ford Ranch Wagon Gear Box oil/grease type
I have had this wagon for 30 years and have never changed the oil or grease on the steering box. There are no leaks so far but the steering is a little hard to turn. I have already changed all the front end parts and lubricated all the lubricant points. I am not sure if it uses a Saginaw box or a different type of gear box and I don't know if it uses oil or grease. Can someone here please tell me what to use on this box. Also, how do I put the oil/grease in the box. Do I remove one of the bolts and fill trough there? I also did a wheel alignment on it.
Thanks for your help. |

Re: 1955 Ford Ranch Wagon Gear Box oil/grease type
Since my wagon is pre 57, looks like I will be using 90w gear oil. I saw the video on rebuilding the gear box so if I ever need to do it, I have a good idea on how to do it.
Thanks KULTULZ for leading me to the post that discusses this problem. I very much appreciate it. |

Re: 1955 Ford Ranch Wagon Gear Box oil/grease type
There are only certain types of grease that should be used in a steering box. Not sure lithium grease is one of them (note: I did not read the article). Corn Head Grease (Deere) is one of them. It liquifies when used in a situation like gears meshing. There are others that are specifically made for steering boxes. Supposed to be leak inhibiting if you have that problem.
Yeah, I guess that "gear box" can be used for a steering box but to me gear box was always a transmission. Steering "gear" to me meant the whole of the steering system. Maybe I led a sheltered life ??

Re: 1955 Ford Ranch Wagon Gear Box oil/grease type
Okay kultulz definitely not afteran argument, I have a 1950 steering box with a leaking seal, I would really like to fix the problem without pulling the pitman arm (I don't have the right puller).
What ratio Lithium chassis grease to 90W oil would you recommend? I will not be able to purchase John Deer cornhead grease in this country. Geoff |
