Dang! I sent it to my kids and one of them said there were no injuries. Maybe he meant no fatal injuries... Holy crap.

Re: Off Topic, Car hits tire, all hell breaks loose
Wow !
years ago, I owned a 22' roll deck car hauler. Locally, I did not carry a spare tire, but on long trips I would carry one up on the deck. Usually, chained up front to the front bulkhead. One time, I dunno, guess I was in a hurry, so I flipped it up on the rear of the empty deck, ran a chain over the top with a chain binder holding it down...good to go. About 100 miles from home, for some reason my eye was watching the mirror when the tire, a 22.5 truck tire, fell off the back at 70 MPH and bounced about 50 feet in the air ! Thank God no one was behind me or I might have killed em. Hindsight and logic, the rear end of an empty deck bounces a lot more than the front. Lucky that day! It was, if you didn't see it, it would be hard to believe. Hopefully no one was injured.

Re: Off Topic, Car hits tire, all hell breaks loose
That tire came off that pick up appeared to have some offset rims, the tire from the truck also looked to contain the brake rotor. I would guess bearing failure from the non stock wheel offset. Might get expensive for truck owner.

OMG...the whole situation looks like a Hollywood movie scene - like from 'The Matrix'.
Also...what's with runaway wheels coming back for a second bash at the victim - just like here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CV1fpKz_-AM |

Re: Off Topic, Car hits tire, all hell breaks loose
I'm lucky too. I lost both driver side duals on my F350 at about 60 on a divided state highway. They crossed the median and flew into oncoming traffic. One took out a grill and headlight of some gal's car but no injuries. My hub was shot but my load of salvaged beams stayed put. The state trooper commended me for using 5 large ratchet straps. The tires were six months old, stock wheels and tire size, installed by a West Coast chain. I knew we were extremely fortunate with the outcome, but this video cements it. I researched the subject well and found a comment from a company that has a large fleet of '90s F350s and said "we lose about one set of duallies a year". I immediately bought sixteen 9/16" jamb nuts.

Honda, thanks for listing that video in your post. It is unbelievable how that tire, after hitting the motor bike, went way up the tunnel roadway and then made it all the way back thru heavy traffic and then hit the bike rider again. Can you imagine the carnage inside the tunnel if one of the cars or trucks would have hit that tire. Would have been way worse than the video I posted. .

Re: Off Topic, Car hits tire, all hell breaks loose
Growing up I remember an unfortunate and fatal incident similar to this. There was a grocery store on Rt 22 in Phillipsburg, NJ. That stretch was and still is heavily traveled by tractor trailers.
An entire wheel came off a rig and rolled right at the door while an elderly woman was walking out. Killed her instantly. Sad. I could only imagine the force that wheel had generated as it picked up speed before impact. |

Re: Off Topic, Car hits tire, all hell breaks loose
My Dad was driving his Ford F-350 Lariat recently...when the tread of his tyre (or 'tire' to USA) suddenly flew off.
Luckily he was able to keep control off the vehicle and safely pull over. His truck got significant damage though. The tyre was a Michelin LTX...if anyone has these fitted to anything - you might wish to consider replacing them with something else. When I looked up 'Michelin LTX fail' on Google today...I found several other people with the identical make and model to Dad's tyres - with the same issue. |

Re: Off Topic, Car hits tire, all hell breaks loose
Looks like the driver of the white pickup truck fled the scene and made a bee line for the exit ramp. Didn't have the integrity to pull over and stop. Pretty sad!!
Hope the folks in the black car weren't injured. |

Re: Off Topic, Car hits tire, all hell breaks loose
Several years ago I was following an oil truck,(straight job) down an off ramp ,when he turned left both left rear duals came off the truck ,one laid down immediately and the other one rolled down the road till a mustang coming the other direction took it in the left fender and it went over the car ! No one hurt and we walked back up the ramp looking for any lug nuts and never found one. wonder how long the truck traveled in a straight line without lug nuts ?

Re: Off Topic, Car hits tire, all hell breaks loose
Been there done that - wrote the car off - never caught the transport driver who lost the tire. Nobody killed - police not interested in finding the bugger. Nice argument with the insurance company. Better half pissed. Upside still alive.

Honda Looks like he was going to get to the roadside and pull over...but then seems to just keep going? ================================================== == If you look at the wreck in motion, the rolling car lands on its roof and windshield, and it was actually ahead of the pickup, so the driver of the pickup would have seen the wreck in full view as it was flying apart as it was crashing. The driver of the pickup might have been scared out of his mind, seeing that, and might have thought, if he could get back there, he might see dead bodies laying all over the place, and just panicked and high-tailed it to get as far away as he could. WHO KNOWS ??? .

Re: Off Topic, Car hits tire, all hell breaks loose
I would make a guess, he didn't get too far
I would also guess, he was VERY Happy when he learned that there were No fatalities, and No serious injuries. It was a wreck neither will forget in their lifetimes .

Re: Off Topic, Car hits tire, all hell breaks loose
My guess is that like me, the first thought would be to get the hell off the highway. I doubt he had plans of a getaway on three legs. Reality is that wheel bearing would have been hot and making noise for thousands of miles before it let loose, but the owner had the rap music too loud
