1955/56 Ford and Mercury
Question?
Will the 2 door hardtop doors interchange between the Ford and Mercury? I have a chance at some very usable doors from a 55 Merc to put on my Ford. According to the pictures they look identical, but I'm looking to confirm. Thanks Dave |

Confirm the style of door latches. There could / should be differences in the latches, door post and door area around the latches. 1956 was when the "Lifeguard" safety improvements were introduced.

Re: 1955/56 Ford and Mercury
In '55 and '56 Ford and Mercury both had two different doors for two door hard tops.
The Mercury Monterey had a slightly different shaped vent window and taller than the Montclair (different and lower roof line). The same goes for the Ford Victoria and Crown Victoria. I am not sure if the Ford and Mercury doors are interchangeable, but if I had to guess, I would say yes. There will be trim hole differences along with the '55 vs '56 door latches as dmsffr said previously. Sal |

When I talked about the vent window difference above, I was referring to 1955 only.

Re: 1955/56 Ford and Mercury
I don't know about the Merc, but the '55 hardtop (Victoria) has the same height windshield (hence side windows) as the sedan. Crowns, I believe had the lower windshield and maybe the Sunliner. In '56 this changed in that the hardtops also had a shorter windshield as did the Crowns and Sunliners. This is the main difference that makes the '56 Victoria look more "streamlined" than the '55. I suspect the Mercs are the same but you need to check it out. Hope this isn't confusing.

That's correct. The Monterey hardtop had a higher roofline than the Montclair H/T in '55. Both had the same (lower) roofline in '56. |

Re: 1955/56 Ford and Mercury
I don't know if this will apply to your situation. My 55 Thunderbird has a 56 right rear quarter panel, including the door post. The striker plate on the post had a hand made spacer, movimg the 55 forward enough to engage the star on the door. Works fine, so adjustments that way can be made.
It's also brazed o 1/4" low at the taillight. Always buy a car on level ground, lesson learned. |

Re: 1955/56 Ford and Mercury
In 1954 (and I assume 52 and 53) the Skyliner, the Victoria and the convertible all had a different windshield than the other models. A factory chop job.
I don't know if this was carried over to 55 and 56 as the windshield was changed.

Re: 1955/56 Ford and Mercury
Sorry for not getting on and thanking you guy's for your info.
I bought the Merc doors. The only difference I have found is as Scicala mentioned. The door handle opening is different. The Merc has a bigger opening on the big end, but the hole on the front end is in the correct place. I made a pattern from one of my Ford doors, cut out filler pieces to weld in. Also as was mentioned the chrome is different so I will fill those holes as well. Other than being beat up pretty bad these doors are really rust free. So, I get to practice my metal working skills (a lot). Just about have all the rust areas patched, except those that showed up after sand blasting, the hood was rusted far more than I like so I'm looking for that now, have the underside undercoated and most of the inside painted with KBS coating to prevent rust before I get to paint. Seems it is going to end up way more than I had planned on. Again thanks for the information gang. Dave |

One more thing, in mentioning the door latches. The original doors had 2 different styles of latches, weird.
