Anyone have one of these?
Needing to pull the engine and tranny from my 1930 CCPU, I need a folding Shop Crane from 1 to 2 ton capacity. I think..
Does anyone have a Harbor Freight 1 or 2 ton Crane? Do you like it? Any Caveats? Current price with a Coupon is $139 for the 1 ton. Objective comments very welcome.. Larry Jenkins |

Re: Anyone have one of these?
Just used my crane from HF, it works great and folds up so it takes up less room.

Re: Anyone have one of these?
I have one and it is fine except for one thing. All six wheels are casters and the crane will roll to the side under load if you are on any kind of slope. I would like the casters at the far end of the legs to be fixed wheels instead. I have lost control and tipped sideways when the crane rolled to the edge of the driveway under a load. I dumped a flathead V8 and a South Bend 9" lathe. The lathe suffered some damage but I came out OK. So be careful with it and if it starts to go then get out of the way because you can't stop it.

Re: Anyone have one of these?
I have an older HF. Works great. Not the fold up kind tho. Only has 4 wheels, I think rear two don't turn. I've pulled Y-Blocks with it no problem. I have their load leveler also. http://www.harborfreight.com/2-ton-c...ler-60659.html

Re: Anyone have one of these?
The 1 ton engine hoists usually come up for sale for $99 every once in a while. I usually find them in magazines more often than the coupons that are sent to me or emails.

Re: Anyone have one of these?
I just used the Harbor Freight crane to pull the engine from my sedan. Worked great, I like the fold up feature for storage.

Re: Anyone have one of these?
I have one and I didnt like the fixed wheels on the crane end, so I cut them off and welded on a piece of angle iron so I could put casters on all 4 wheels....
I did this so when I needed to move the crane sideways under the car it was easier. I also bought a jack that works on the up and down stroke, it saves a little time and effort. Different strokes for different folks. |

Re: Anyone have one of these?
Look inside a Car Magazine. Harbor Freight usually has a 1 or 2 page Ad in them. The Coupon prices are cheaper than Harbor Freights normal Sales Flyers. I've seen it for $99.00 last month.

Re: Anyone have one of these?
My friend likes his H/F hoist. BTW, hydraulic jacks are less likely to leak or get air pockets if they are stored completely collapsed and with the valve shut.
As with creepers, keep the wheels well lubed and they roll a lot easier. |

Re: Anyone have one of these?
On the 4 wheel caster thing, having it both ways would be the best. So often I need to scoot the thing sideways an inch or three to get lined up. But rolling it outside to load an engine is annoying because it's hard to steer! Think I'm going to cobble up a way to lock and unlock the front casters on my new HF fold-up.

Re: Anyone have one of these?
I bought this one -- brand new, never assembled -- on Craig's List for ~ $150. No freight. (except for the 50 mile trip to go get it) Folds up nice when not in use.

Re: Anyone have one of these?
The only problem I have with my HF unit is that it's made in China.

Just try and find one that isn't made in China. Not so easy!

Re: Anyone have one of these?
I have one and used it for many things. to remove motors, raise the roaster body up. to flip and raise our baby grand piano to put on dolly. to remove a 60 inch big screen TV off the wall. to lift my tig welder out of the back of my pickup truck. I always make sure I am or anyone else is out of the way incase the cylinder was to collapse as it is like a bottle jack.

Re: Anyone have one of these?
I have a HF lift that works but the hydraulics have a tendency to leak. It will lift the engine but will not hold so you can't turn your back on it. THe engine will gradually settle all the way down.

Re: Anyone have one of these?
I have the HF lift as well. I think i have the larger 1.5-2 ton one. My dad bought it, and he tends to get a little overkill sometimes
I think its great. It went together fairly simple. I highly suggest having a second pair of hands to help you lift the package and to assemble it all. It's pretty hefty.

Re: Anyone have one of these?
Ram seals seem to last better, if you leave it jacked up part way, with a 50 or 60 lb WEIGHT HANGING on it, to keep the seals expanded. Sorta' like hydraulic brakes on a car that is RARELY driven.
With plywood under its' wheels & a chain wrapped around its trunk, it's GREAT for pulling UNWANTED bushes from your YARD! Bill W.

Re: Anyone have one of these?
Or.... you could drill a hole from the top of the leg beam down through the following edge of the caster stamping, and drop a pin through the hole and down into the caster short of the wheel, to lock the caster in position, at a point where the two leg casters are sitting parallel with each other. Like this. Then the caster will not turn and let the crane move sideways when you don't want it to do so.

Re: Anyone have one of these?
Ditto on the Harbor Freight shop crane.
The only problem is that it does not work when it gets cold - by cold I mean below zero. |

Re: Anyone have one of these?
When you pull the engine, you should lower the beam so the engine is just a few inches off the ground before you roll it across the room. You will be much less likely to tip it over this way.
I do the same with my Allis WD and loader, when I use it to move something. |
