ignition switch
I removed the ignition switch because the key that came with the old car is worn out or the key needs to be replaced. I see you can purchase the key and the tumbler assembly without having to replace the complete ignition switch assembly. So there must be a way to get the tumbler assembly out of the switch assembly. If anyone knows how to change the tumbler is a 56, I sure would appreciate the help.

Re: ignition switch
There should be a small hole in the switch bezel, about the diameter of a paper clip. If you insert the end of a paper clip or back end of a very small drill bit, with the key in the ignition, it should unseat the lock. Then turn the key counterclockwise past accessory position, and pull the tumbler out. Hope this helps.

Re: ignition switch
'55-56 ignitions don't have a hole in the front to stick a pin into. I seem to remember a hole on the switch body or button on the switch body you push while turning the switch to the left and pulling it out. Been a long time since I've done this.
In the photo you can see the pin on the top right that needs to be depressed to remove the cylinder. Last edited by Y-Blockhead; 11-02-2013 at 10:33 AM. |

Re: ignition switch
FYI. If you ever break off a key inside one of this type tumblers, you can still get home. Remove the tumbler, and remove the SS cap. Turn it upside down and empty the springs and tumblers all out. Reinstall. Now you can turn it with anything, the trunk key, a GM key, a screw diver, or a nail clipper. Door tumblers too.

Re: ignition switch
Or turn it with a screwdriver if the broken piece is still inside.
Personally I've never got that wild in the FRONT seat to break the key off... |
