Default Questions Selecting Oil Filter Cartridge

Bought filter canister for my '47 59AB. Including some gunk, I found a used Hastings 314 filter element in it measuring 3.9" diameter x 4-3/4" high. Googled Hastings 314 and found "Hastings LF314" at many sellers at between say $9 and $15.

(1) What oil filter brand(s) do Member's here favor ? On the web, Wix 51004 appears to be the only brand of comparable size. Fram CH6PL not verified but may be too big.

(2) In comparing the LF314 seller's, I saw that the height of their "LF314" units are often less than my 4-3/4" high sample .... sometimes the diameters are also smaller. I assume bigger is better - better flow-thru and less pressure reduction.

(3) Pressure restrictors: Where does one get them or does one make one ?

Thanks to all .... Dan

The was a resent post with a link to a supplier with the restrictor. A lot of people close up an opening with solder and drill it .060.

Well, isn't that interesting, it was you asking the same question!! Ten days ago, 1-08-2016

Jseery .... I looked back at that tread and yes you're right. Post #2 pretty much had an answer for me but I got distracted by the rest of that tread when it digressed into a discussion of toilet paper and full-flow filter systems.

Otherwise, I admit to being prone to senior moments these days.

Question #1 ; Go to Napa. Get Napa Gold filter 1006. This filter is made by Wix which is an excellent made in USA filter. Don't think you can do any better.
Just an opinion.

Napa/Wix filter is a good filter and is rated at 10 Microns.(the smallest particle filtered)
But, the Amsoil bypass filter is better at 2-3 Microns.
The system has to be modified with a spin-on adapter.
This is my installation that fits inside the original canister housing.

All those ratings are nominal numbers not absolute, just so you know.
Now hydraulic filters are another story.

Thanks for your input everyone. I have a NAPA very close to me; will hit them up. Put in perspective, the micron filtration rating of my non-existent filtering system is a big fat "0".

Also, keep in mind, that the flathead oil filtration system is a bypass system, meaning that, potentially, there could be some oil that never goes through the filter to be filtered at all, no matter the effectiveness of the filter.

Perhaps, but on a measured test (by me) it was determined that 5 qts. of oil flowed thru the bypass filter every 11 min. at engine idle speed with oil pressure at 20-25 psi.
At higher or lower oil pressure the flow rate may be different.
