direction oil pump turns
I have a new oil pump for my 29 and need to prime the pump. Which direction does the pump turn, clockwise or counter clockwise? I will immerse it in a can of oil and turn it with my drill to prime it enough to lube the gears. It might not be necessary but I will be more confident there will be oil on startup.

Re: direction oil pump turns
Counterclockwise looking from the shaft end- just like the distributor looking from the top.

Be sure to place a small bucket or cup next to the hole where the oil squirts out so that you can catch the exiting oil. Otherwise, the pump will send a stream of oil halfway across the garage! MESSY!

To prime the engine you can pour the last quart down the hole that the distributor goes in.

Re: direction oil pump turns
oldspert,
As nkaminar says, I highly recommend pulling the distributor and pouring at least 2 quarts of oil down the hole to help prime the pump and flood the lifter gallery and upper main bearing oil supply. Everything gets a good baptism in fresh oil. Nothing is disturbed by pulling the distributor and it is easy to slip back in place - your timing and point gap are not affected in any way.
