I think you'll find out that GAZ is an acronym for a "company" like GMC in America. ZIM, ZIL, (Chaika) and I'm sure there's others. The communist govt was fond of pretending that they were all independent by calling them "Companies" or "Bureaus" when in fact, they were organs of the party. It was not a name for a specific model. I can't say for sure, but I think cars and trucks are still being made under the the GAZ name.

When I was In Russia, in 1991, one of our guides said this" they pretend to pay us and we pretend to work". Very sad and very true.
