Default 1940 Ford Inside Sunvisors

I just received my upholstered sun-visors from LaBaron-Bonney. Now I need to install them on the 'rods' so they don't FLOP! I have installed on my vise and began crimping with the rod installed; but when I release from vise the metal sleeve releases somewhat and is not getting the job done. I am considering crimping the visor without the rod, but, of course, do not want to risk collapsing the visor. I don't want to 'screw them up'. At this time, I am 'going to think about it' for awhile.

Does anyone know of a 'trick' to accomplish?

Bend the rod a bit before inserting it in the new visor.
