New Water pump and new August 2023 Fan
Just a heads up. I found my new Aluminum Fan on my new Water pump was loose on the shaft. The Castle nut can be tighten to secure the Fan further to resolve the issue, however the castle nut when tightened was threading down father on the shaft and beyond the cotter pin hole.
In my opinion based on my observations the new fan COULD be out of spec. Why do I have this opinion? The old steel fan did not have this issue. The issue was noticed in last few days with a rather loud rattle was developing. All the best Dan 1929 Model A. Re: New Water pump and new August 2023 Fan
I used a washer between the fan and castle nut that I carefully reamed out the center hole for good fit on the shaft and I was then was able to use the castle nut and cotter pin to secure the Fan tight in the shaft again.
I want to add that my fan was tight but then became loose over time. At the time of installation I tightened the castle nut enough to use the cotter pin and at the time it appeared to be tight and secure. I will still be calling the supplier on Tuesday. Re: New Water pump and new August 2023 Fan
Mine came loose three times and i finally put a washer in front and tightened the nut real tight and it hasn't come loose again. I think there is a problem with the taper and so I am watching it every time I drive it. So far it hasn't come loose a fourth time.

I do not know the answer to that question but suspect as such.

I fit the fan without the key and valve grinding compound to lap the shaft and fan hub.
Check the fit with Prussian blue and then install the key and a thin hard washer. |

Re: New Water pump and new August 2023 Fan
On a separate but related note, I recently received two of the new batch of cast aluminum 2-blade fans. I have three water pumps (two on cars, one spare) and two out of the three water pump castings were too large to fit within the fan. This is not unknown, as the thickness of the aluminum casting in that area is greater than the thickness of the stamped steel version. Snyders at least (and likely other vendors) warns of this in the Instructions attached to the web page description.
You can use a file or grinder to turn down the casting nose, but I made up a mounting plate and turned the noses down in my lathe. I found a final diameter of 1.625" (1-5/8") centered on the shaft works well. I also found that the water pump casting is not necessarily concentric around the shaft, so parts of the nose got turned away and parts didn't. If you are doing this freehand be aware that you won't necessarily need to remove an equal amount around the nose.

Re: New Water pump and new August 2023 Fan
If the fan is on that far that the castle nut is "beyond the cotter pin hole", is there a problem with the fan belt alignment? Or is the fan machined too far at the cantle nut?

Re: New Water pump and new August 2023 Fan
Been there done that- Just use a washer under the castle nut. The aluminum by nature is soft and the washer will take care of displacing the force of the nut over a wider and softer area.

Re: New Water pump and new August 2023 Fan
I think it is wise to put bluing on the pump shaft taper and inside of the new fan's taper. Turn the fan on the shaft a few revolutions and then evaluate the fit. If the fit of the taper is bad, return the fan and let the seller know.
Is the taper in the fan "finish machined" or is it in an "as cast" condition? It should be machined for accuracy, not left as cast!

The tapers in the two new ones I have are machined.
