Default Thermostats

Having my water pumps rebuilt by Skip Haney and looking into a pair of thermostats from Robert Shewman. I live in Southern California and not sure how much the truck will be driven but wondering if I need 160 or 180 thermostats. Thanks for suggestions.

Matter of opinion I guess. I've been running 160's in mine for many years. As far as running better with 180s? I've never been able to tell the difference.

It won't make a hill of beans difference one or the other. The thermostat isn't a factor unless it fails to function as designed.

I would run the 180s at least. The higher engine temp you can maintain the more efficient the engine runs.

I run Bob Shewman's 180s in mine with Skips pumps . There is wide range of opinions on this forum regards Thermostats or not , If thermostats Shewman's or not and Temp settings. Made my head spin. Thermostats I believe are a good idea the higher temperature an engine runs at improves performance and burns of sludge . Bob modifies his thermostats by drilling holes in them which some say defeats the purpose but these are the ones that Skip recommends and I chose to go with his advice -Karl

I would prob agree with the drilling of holes in an unpressurised system.

I tend to see a double opening of the thermostat from cold.

It quickly warms up, then opens, then it must close again as it gets a rush of coolant, then warms up and opens again, then it is fine for the rest of the trip.

You need 180's, 169 is to low. It does make a diffrernce what stats you
use. Most stats don't have a large enough flow opening and restrict the
flow. Why buy high flow pumps and then restrict their flow. Stick with
Bob Shewman's. G.M.

If 180's are the preferred stats for our flatheads, why does Bob Shewman offer 160 stats for flatheads as well???

I would guess it is because there are a lot of people that think running a 160 thermostat helps prevent the engine overheating. Need to fix any overheat issues and then run a higher temp thermostat.

He recommends the 180's but received a small amount of 160's
[n a lot he bought. Just like on this forum some people have
their own Ideas. G.M.

I'm wondering if the climate where you live could be a determining factor as well....

I'm in eastern NY State in the Adirondack Mountains. I use 160 stat's with a 6-blade fan to keep my engine compartment cooler in summer. I have recent/new radiator and good stock pumps. The engine runs at about 175 to 180 degrees on a level highway on 70 to 80 degree summer day ..... might hit 185-190 on a long up-hill but cool-down thereafter. I use to encounter vapor lock when I had 180's and used a 4-blade fan.
