4 speed trans ID help
Any input greatly appreciated on this trans.
I know it's a 4 speed from an early to mid '50's Ford truck. Is it a BW T8? BW T98? Or something else? Numbers on the left side are WG CO T8D 3A. I'd like to know what it is as I need a new rear seal and an output yoke, but not sure what to look for. Thanks! Edit: I attached pics but they didn't seem to come up. Re: 4 speed trans ID help
DZL Jim, welcome aboard. Check the size of your photos, that is usually the issue with pictures failing to load. There are several recent discussions about uploading photos on this forum. Use the search function if you need further information on posting photos on the forum.

Re: 4 speed trans ID help
Well shoot, I can't change the pic size since its only allowing for a url based pic and it's in my google Photos. I have smaller pics on my computer but no way to post them.

Re: 4 speed trans ID help
Thanks for the suggestion Bob, but that's not an option when I try to load a pic. Only thing it shows me is where I insert a URL address.

WOW ....You GO, Jim! So, no need for me to post your pics, but we'll make the interesting one BIG, anyway. What's REALLY important here is that you found out just how EASY it is to post pictures on The 'Barn. That's likely to turn-out to almost be worth more than that funny transmission. I'm proud that you got the pics posted so easily! DD . |

Re: 4 speed trans ID help
Looks Canadian Ford. They didn't use the hogs head on theirs but I can't see the parting line area well enough to tell for sure. It's painted like a Ford tractor. It's likely the same or similar to the basic T8 & T9 type Borg Warner 4-speed crash box that Ford used for so long.

Re: 4 speed trans ID help
Some info I copied up from another forum. Helps me, thought I'd share:
"T8 and T9 are the same transmission... the cases are marked WG T8. The case on the transmission out of my '49 F4 is marked T 8 D-1A. The other side of the case is 59T-7006, 1945 truck. It is original to the '49." "The case used from 1945-1951 has a part number 59T-7006 and did not use the external reverse lock out. The 59T cases have a removable half bell and are also marked W.G., then in a second line, T 8 D-1A." "1948/56 truck parts catalog lists two 4 speeds: Warner T-9 & Warner T-98." "...no T8's after '47. 1948 thru '50 they are T9's, and 51-52 had T98." Looks like the numbers I originally posted were incorrect, and they are probably WG T8D-1A. I'll have to check the numbers on the other side for kicks to confirm the 59T designation, but it looks like I have a T98 since it's a '55 model. I'll know more when I get it pulled off. |
