Tool indentification

Looks like it could possible be a specific purpose made holder for dial indicators for performing shaft alignment using the reverse dial method.

briphaeton has it correct. you place your valve in the fixture bump the bottom edge to your valve, transfer this to the drop in dummy valve and on your valve grinder set the dummy against the stem grinding wheel( wheel stopped) and dial back the clearance on the valve grinder.

Yup, that's it. A low tech version of the micrometer version, that will work with mushroom stem valves.

But now you know what it's for, so now you need it! Good news, another new tool on the shelf! But wait, do you need a Sioux valve grinding machine to go with it? Yes, I think so, and those are big. Got one to sell you though...
