1956 312 ci cylinder head bolts
Am rebuilding the heads on my '56 312 ci Y Block and am having trouble finding replacement head bolts that are the proper length, particularly the two longer ones that go on the ends of each head.
Any help is very much appreciated!! |

Re: 1956 312 ci cylinder head bolts
Try John Mummert in CA. or Ted Eaton in Texas. They do not have to be 312 bolts, the 272's and 292's used the same length bolts.

Re: 1956 312 ci cylinder head bolts
55 (and I'm assuming 54) did not use two different length bolts under the valve covers. My 55 Tbird has a 56 block and 55 heads. It does have the longer end bolts. Ted Eaton said that Grade 8 bolts are an improvement over the originals. I would consult Ted about using washers (if necessary) if the bolts are a bit longer than the originals.

Talked with John Mummert today and ordered the ARP bolts for the '56 312. Even CASCO doesn't carry replacements, so guessing not enough demand. Only reason I'm not reusing the originals is I'm missing one of the proper length head edge bolts, and couldn't find a grade 8 replacement the right length. Also found a great explanation of the different Y Block head bolts by Gil Baumgartner in his "Gil's Garage" write up. |
