I spray the tire with soapy water. I cut up a plastic water bottle and put those between my tire irons and wheel. That keeps the wheel from getting messed up.

I used to use soapy water or plain liquid dish soap on modern tubeless tires until I saw how it corroded the aluminum rims. I switched to using Vaseline and it seals the beads better, keeps the rust and corrosion away, and makes installation easier.

Guys,
Real simple, 1 can of spray silicone spray around the valve stem & the tire bead. the tire goes right on.

Thanks for the link! A bit pricey, but for someone with no access to the correct tints, that would be the way to go..

Do you take your wheels and tires to a place like Discount Tire and hope they get it right? Or do most of you do it yourself to reduce the risk of getting your wheels messed up? Thanks.

Yeah I think Discount Tire would be left scratching their heads with a Model A tire.

Tom I have no idea if it applies in your case however just driving with underinflated tires causes the tire to creep relative to the tube and the rubber stems to deflect. I knew a gent who was plagued by flat tires due to damage at the valve stem (he checked tire inflation after long periods of storage by eyeballing them). He had more flats in a year than 30 of us driving more miles had.

Had the tire creep happen to me with new tires, they looked fine but were actually low.

Never had any tube creep in a Model A or vintage tractor tire.

Never used talcum powder in the tire or on the tube to make it slip.

Wow, thanks to zzlegend for the link to the trash bag method for mounting tires on my newly powder coated Model A wheels. Local shops didn't want to try and wouldn't guarantee they could install with our chipping the rim. Made the stand from scrap 2x4s and 5/8 plywood scraps, topped it with old carpet. Cut a 12 inch diameter hole in the center, carpet on the edge of hole to protect the wheel finish. Base was 32 x 32, but 40 x 40 is better if you have the wood (easier to stand on). Secret to a fairly easy install: put the tires in the sun for at least an hour (get em hot), corn starch on the tubes, black trash bag over the back side of wheel (front side goes down in the hole), tire lube or dish soap on the bead, gorilla duck tape over my tire spoons (only had to use them a few times) and stand on the tire to force the bead down/walk it around with one foot on each side/once started push that bead down in to the drop center of wheel to give you a better position to finish the last part of the bead. Fairly easy, even for an old guy. Did 5 tires in one day! (15-30 minutes a piece, I am slow and careful) Now some brake work... A lot of great advice here. ps- still have my first car from 1964, a 1931 deluxe coupe ( "A bone")

I mounted my first set of tires years ago, didn't get them centered,it rode as if the tires were egg shaped,I figured it out eventually.

My Local Discount Tire Dealer had my tires and tubes shipped to them for the same price, installed my stems and mounted them for free. I even purchased replacement insurance. I'm sure not all stores can do this , but they did a great job.

I just added a set of tire irons to my collection, they came from Harbor Freight and were
on sale for $4.00 a piece. They must be for trucks because they are very long
should be good for the last little bit when you need the big umph.

I'm tackling the tire mounting now. The bag works great for putting them on, but what's the trick for easy removal of reusable tires? I've been fighting the removal for 2 days and have not succeeded on any yet. In the past I only had junk tires to remove so I put my chain saw to work and got them off. Now I want to save the tires and the wheels.
