40 coupe with 59AB?? Lots of questions.[emoji16]
We're working on my brother's 40 standard coupe, freshly imported from Texas to The Netherlands. Has been off the roads probably since end of the 60s. I took the intake and drivers side head off today. Looks very promising as far as I can tell. No visible cracks, smooth cilinder walls. We're really just starting to find stuff out about this car, so any help is appreciated!
Are we looking at a 59AB engine? I'm guessing still 6V positive ground. Bored over .060. Has Offenhauser heads. Intake?? It has the adjustable lifters. When were those used? Not stock, were they?? Carter WCD carb...not standard I guess? Anything else that sticks out in the pictures? Our idea is to clean the cilinders and try to get the engine freed up. Also take the oil pan off and inspect the crankcase. If all looks good we'll try to get it running. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks. Verstuurd vanaf mijn SM-G781B met Tapatalk |

Judging by the center water holes I’d say yes it’s a 59A.

Here is a picture of the 59AB that is in my '46 Coupe before I cleaned it up. The "rabbit ear" distributor also indicated a 59 of some version.

It could be a 59A, center round hole and crab distributor for example. Access is limited, but see if you can find 59 on the top part of the bell housing. A small mirror with a flashlight pointed at the mirror will help.

Are the head gaskets still in place in the pictures of the cylinder deck? Positive identification of the engine will be as described in the thread or the pdf compiled by Glenn.

No, in that picture I had just taken the gasket off. The gasket had the trapezium shaped openings though the block has the round holes in the center.

Very cool car. I have seen a lot worse than that when heads are pulled, and it looks pretty complete. Hopefully you can take us along with a video of initial start!

That's definately our intention! Might take a few weeks.
We're also working on a 36 Sedan with the original LB engine. That one looked terrible when we pulled the heads. Turned out to be rebuildable after all. Now at the machine shop. Verstuurd vanaf mijn SM-G781B met Tapatalk |

Definitely looks like a 59A or 41A engine. Does it pass the pencil test or not?
You might be in luck that with a good cleaning and a gasket set the engine is good to go. |

Haven't tried yet. You lay a pencil on the ridge of the block, just above the distributor?

Re: 40 coupe with 59AB?? Lots of questions.[emoji16]
Ok, we did some more work.
We got the other head off (passenger side) as well. That one was much harder. Also not so bad overall, though the 2 aft cylinders had some light debris and surface rust on the walls. Got that smoothened out with some scotch brite. Vacuumed it and cleaned up all the cylinders. Sprayed them with Marvel and PB Blaster. We put a torque wrench on the pulley and the engine turned over on the 1st attempt.[emoji16] I turned it over couple of times and checked the valves. 2 were stuck open, but came loose with some lubricant on the lifters and a single tap on the valve. We could use some guidance from here. A few valve seats are a bit rusty/pitted. What's the best way to go here? Clean it up with a Dremel wheel? Hone the cilinders, or just some scotch brite? Clean the pistons with a brush/wire wheel? Oh yeah, it's a 59. No idea A or AB. It does have an 'A' on the bell housing, passenger side. And no way a pencil could lay above the timing cover. Bit hard to see on the picture, but there's no ridge there. Easier way was looking into the valve/lifter area, since the intake manifold was off anyway. There's a big '59' stamp in there.🫣 Verstuurd vanaf mijn SM-G781B met Tapatalk |
