Outside mirrors
These mirrors were on the car when we got it. The arms angle to the front instead of to the rear, making them impossible to see out of. The car is a 31 S/W for reference. If someone can see a problem, I sure would appreciate some ideas.

Are they mounted upside-down?

Re: Outside mirrors
I don't think so. I've looked at some pictures of other cars and the arm on them is on the top.

Re: Outside mirrors
These are standard 30/31 mirrors that work well on tudors, coupes, and MOST fordors ........ but not necessarily so on slant window cars. A better bet is the mirror that is made for 28/29 closed cars. The bracket that goes over the hinge is designed so that it will give a greater degree of adjustment toward the rear of the vehicle and give you the angle you desire to then be able to adjust the mirror head for better vision on both sides of the car. The hinges on the slant window cars are slightly shorter than those on straight window cars so you may have to insert some washers/shims between the brackets and hinge. Also, the slant window hinge pins are larger, in diameter, than those for the straight window cars, but if the current mirrors have the smaller pins, you can use them with the 29/29 mirrors as well.
Feel free to send me a Private Message or email if you need more of an explanation before spending $$$$$$ for new mirrors. Good luck. Bob Bader |

Re: Outside mirrors
I just bought a pair, and they are in separate boxes marked left and right. I haven't even taken them out of the boxes yet but will and see which way the enclosed piece faces and let you know.

Re: Outside mirrors
That would be a great help. That way I would know which side they should be on.

Re: Outside mirrors
Gary - None of the mirrors that you can get through the vendors work on the 31 slant window cars. I've already been through this. One person who answered my inquiry months ago had one set he had fashioned that he sold to me and they work great. The issue, as you've undoubtedly found out, is the angle the arms are bent to. They are not enough (for some reason) on the 31s. They are fine on the other cars, apparently.
One person told me to simply take the regular vendor mirrors and heat and bend them. I don't have the tools to do that or rechrome them either. Good luck with finding something. |

Re: Outside mirrors
I apologize for the not-up-close pic, but it's the only one I have right now (my cars don't live with me). Take a look at the rearview mirror - the arm is longer and the mirror is not centered on it. Anyway, because of the angle of the door, the regular mirrors won't turn in far enough to be usable. That's the issue we're dealing with.

Re: Outside mirrors
Well, this stupid system is not letting me upload pics - it just keeps telling me to register and log in, so sorry - no pic. But trust me - the arm is much longer than the regular mirror arm

Re: Outside mirrors
I checked the new ones and the enclosed piece faces to the back of the car and has two set screws that you adjust to get the right angle on the arm. I hope this helps.

Re: Outside mirrors
I used the same arms, but the black ones. Yes they do face forward a little. I can see fine out of my drivers side and I put a convex mirror on the passenger side.

Re: Outside mirrors
You all made me go out and look at my mirrors on a late 31 Tudor! The set screws need to be tighten against the door part of the hinge so when the door is opened the mirrors move with the doors. If you could mount them with the set screws tighten against the body part of the hinge, your doors wouldn’t open enough to enter.

Re: Outside mirrors
Some of the mirrors have a mounting stud that is too short to allow proper adjustment. One needs to get mirrors w/a longer mounting stud, it doesn't take much of an increase in length to make a difference.

Re: Outside mirrors
Last resort is to make your] own mirror arms. Having no luck finding anything that gave me a good right side rear view, I made a wood master for each side and had it cast in brass.

Re: Outside mirrors
Wow, they look great! I have started to whittle down the mounting portion of my passenger arm. I've got it almost where I can use it. I may leave it where it is now and add a convex mirror on that side.
