Tod's NEW WINFIELD test review
About a month and a half ago, Tod sent me one of his new Iron 6:1 winfield's to test. And there is only one word for it, AMAZING. I replaced my snyders 5.5:1 head with his winfield 6:1 and it was a world of difference. I have driven the car roughly 2800 miles since i installed it, and it has been wonderful. I even tested it from texas to colorado and back for the MAFCA national to give it a good loaded down higher RPM road test. And it pulled every hill better than i could have ever asked it to. I'm not going to get all technical, but the reason it had such an improvement over the 5.5:1 is because of the design of the combustion chamber the winfield's have. I still recommend the snyders 5.5:1 or 6:1 head, which Tod also Casts.
I did end up backing my timing off to about 24 degrees total advance for this head though. I wasnt getting any "pinging" from the increase in compression but after test driving it at 29 degrees advance, i could just tell it was too much. It pulled even better with that much advance, but i could feel/hear the pounding the cylinders were taking with that much advance. The people that understand what i mean with that last sentence will get what i'm saying. So at 24 degrees, it pulled my coupe fully loaded down with tools, parts, and clothes to colorado and back. While sitting on top of Ron Kelley's touring engines we cruised at a average of 68 mph there and back (often faster), with the motor never breaching 165 degrees. I will say that i highly recommend this head, when it comes out in production. It wont be the only one that I own, I can guarantee that.

Are you running a Gary Bernard 4 speed overdrive, with 3.78 rear end ratio?

Thanks Dave! We made it official today... It's going to be a learning curve though out the next year or so.

Re: Tod's NEW WINFIELD test review
Sounds like a plan. The goal is to have 1-2 old cars in the shop at all times. Those being the complete build projects, while teaching them the modern body work also.

Re: Tod's NEW WINFIELD test review
I have 4 in the shop to machine right now, and I'm sure they are all spoken for. I will be making more soon.
I also posted a picture of the first aluminum block on my Facebook page. I may get to the point of taking a picture of the block sitting in the fixture and IN the machining center. Tod |
