EVR in Powerhouse
Got Tom Wesenberg's EVR installed into my 3 brush powerhouse around 11pm last night. I was able to do it without removing the generator from the car. How sweet is that?
Fired it up and tested everything. It was really strange to see the ammeter needle point at just a titch above zero. When I changed the load by turning things on and off the needle jumped in the appropriate direction and then returned to close to zero. So... I went for broke. I took it out for a spin. The headlight, now that I've got them working, focused and aimed, did a surprisingly good job. I don't think I want to head cross country but they are enough to get me home at night and I don't have to make those annoying generator adjustments. Thanks Tom!! |

Re: EVR in Powerhouse
I'm curious... can you post some photos of the device? And some basic installation steps? What's it cost?

Re: EVR in Powerhouse
I know that there are some photos around the fordbarn because that's how I came to know its existence. But, of course, I can't find them.
It's a pretty slick unit. Imagine a banana shaped circuit board curved to match the side of the generator. Now, mount that board on the posts that the connections for the large brushes are attached to and connect the one wire from the board to the post that the small (third) brush (which you remove) was connected to. That's it. I was just under $90 if I remember correctly. (worth it in my book just to stop messing around with that third brush.) |

Awesome! I assume there is an EVR for long generators.

Re: EVR in Powerhouse
I, too, have a 1928 leatherback sedan, original, with Tom's EVR in the powerhouse generator. I love the old car and the EVR makes the powerhouse a great unit. Once the cutout has kicked in, I can actually idle down and still show a charge. Tom does a nice job on these units and it sure is nice to have variable output.

Re: EVR in Powerhouse
Tom is working on a 5 brush unit for me now. I must applaud his electrical talents and knowledge of Model "A" amperage.

Re: EVR in Powerhouse
The EVR is made for 6 volt positive ground, but my friend's 29 Stutz has a 6 volt negative ground Delco generator, so I unhooked the field ground and control that with the EVR and supply + 6 volts to the field wire that ran to the adjustable brush.

Re: EVR in Powerhouse
I run a 5 brush EVR of Tom's, best thing since sliced bread, would not hesitate to recommend fitting them, it is a delight and pleasure reading the postings on the Ford Barn, one never stops learning.

Re: EVR in Powerhouse
There are two references to a voltage regulator for the 5 brush powerhouse above. I have a 5 brush on my 28 Leather Back which is giving me fits with burned bulbs and likely at least one coil with what I believe are high voltage spikes.
I am seeing running voltage in the high 6's to low 7 volts steady state at low cruse RPM. Random spikes up to and beyond 8.5 volts are not uncommon. Done so far: Added dedicated ground to starter, checked wiring grounds front to back, new ammeter, cleaned all connections within the powerhouse, noted all bush connection pins are soldered to brush frame, cleaned the brush to frame contacts with gen housing and added a new coil. I am wondering if Wesenberg's 5 brush regulator is on the market at this time? In my web searching has not located contact info for Tom. If anyone can assist with suggestions and Tom's web page or email, I would appreciate the assistance. Thanks in advance. |

Re: EVR in Powerhouse
I would recommend Tom Wesenberg's EVR unit the best Model "A" accessory available. He has installed a total of three for me on 2 separate 5-brush and one 3-brush unit and they all work 100% as MrWzrd above detailed.
My only heartache was to have the USPS damage one causing end play with the armature which Tom was very willing to help fix. When shipping heavy 80 year old parts across country I recommend paying the higher costs for UPS knowing they won't get damaged. Money well spent. Thank you again Thomas!!!.........I hope those candies went to good use!

Re: EVR in Powerhouse
Here are a couple I whipped up recently for fun. No guarantees. Look good on paper. R4 should be 4.64K, wouldn't copy over correctly.
T1 shown are surface mount, PSMN1R9 is T0-220 equiv of PSMN1R8. |
