Default Transmission

What wt. grease does a 1950 ford Trans. use, and the second question how difficult is the seal on the output shaft on above trans. to replace? Thanks in advance

Ford original called out mild extreme pressure gear oil, Winter SAE 80 & Summer SAE 90. In todays ratings that would be GL-4 (NOT GL-5) and a multi-grade gear oil covers both winter and summer ratings. Some GL-5 gear oil claims it is GL-4 compatible, this is true lubrication wise, but I would not trust it to be "yellow" metal compatible. Transmissions have components in them that strong extreme pressure (EP) additives can attack. IMO it is best to stick with the GL-4 (mild EP) rated gear lubricates.

A rating like 85W/90 is an example of a modern gear lube. The "W" stands for Winter rating, where the viscosity is rated a lower (Winter) temperature. Sta-Lube is an example of a GL-4 gear lubricate.
