Default starters

How can I tell the difference between a 30's 4-cylinder starter and a V-8 starter? I think I have a 32-34 starter.

I beleive that the 3 hole mounting flange is part of the starter on the 4 cylinder and on a 32 - 53 v8 the starter had no 3 hole mounting.

The 32-33 4 banger starter I have has 3 screws to mount the starter switch vs A starter with 4 screws. (Has flat copper pad under switch.)

This starter was from a Model B combine engine so it might be different from car/truck.

It has a wire cable "pull" instead of the "rod" switch.

The 32-34(?) starters have a threaded stud, for the battery cable, in the same
location as the copper pad, as an A. They are same size, bolt pattern, A&B 4banger.
The V/8 is longer and bolts up differently.

Whilst we're on starters... Is it true that the electric specification ( eg coils, thickness of wires etc) was the same for the 12volt starter as the Model A 6v one? ( and hence the Model A 6v starter can happily take 12v) Or this just an urban myth

That's a myth, a model A 6 volt starter has 2 field coils in parallel with the other 2.
For 12 volts, all 4 field coils are wired in series.

If you operate a 6 volt starter on 12 volts it MAY work for a while, But how long!
Best to buy new field coils wired for 12 Volts.

32 B starter has 3 screw switch as Benson stated.33 B starter has threaded post on bottom side of starter. 33s had switch mounted on steering box with short cable to starter.I also believe there was 2 types of s-switch in 32.
