Factory original, service replacement, or gyp?
Anyone know for sure when this spindle bolt was produced? It is consistent with having been on the car it came from for many, many years. The one on the other side of the car had the same marking on the shaft but no markings on the head and had a considerably different shape. Thanks.

Re: Factory original, service replacement, or gyp?
I heard the expression all the time as a kid but it has died out.
gyp 1 /dʒɪp/ Show Spelled [jip] Show IPA verb, gypped, gyp·ping, noun verb (used with object), verb (used without object) 1. to defraud or rob by some sharp practice; swindle; cheat. 2. a swindle or fraud. 3. Also, gyp·per /ˈdʒɪpər/ Show Spelled[jip-er] Show IPA, gypster. a swindler or cheat. 4. Also called gypsy. an owner of racehorses who also acts as trainer and jockey.

Re: Factory original, service replacement, or gyp?
I believe the kingpin is an original Ford part, posibably made as a replacement part. I have several NOS Ford kingpins with the same marking on the shaft. I suppose some company could have copied the Ford logo and other info (A and K), but why would the company have gone overboard and added the addition script on the head. No one will probably even know for sure if it is a Ford part or a "gyp" part. Also, if it lasted as long as you said, it must be an original Ford part or very good "gyp" part. Ford used very good virgin steel and hardened parts to an extremely hard state.

Re: Factory original, service replacement, or gyp?
The usage in the Service Bulletins by Ford is presumably what is being referred to here...no need for dictionary work, it just means "not by us here at Ford"!
I think Ford logo was NOT a general part of the gyp. Ford was VERY protective of that, and anyone who stamped that on an aftermarket part would have gone right into a very steep and nasty learning curve on infringement law! |
