Default Fan oil

As previously mention I知 getting 40 coupe ready for long trip. Reading shop manual it says, remove screw, use tranny gear oil (1 oz) and then prior to putting screw back turn fan (placing cloth under) and only excess oil will come out. Return to top position and put screw back.

I知 not doubting the Bible (and maybe to difficult to explain) but curious how this is designed to work.

Are you sure, believe that should be engine oil. I think you drain it because the fan assemble will throw it all over the place if it is full.

I just checked 4 different lubrication sources and they all specify engine oil.

One problem - a fan on a '40 doesn't get oiled.

Kube is correct, as usual. '40 fans are glued directly to the crankshaft. It's the '42-'48 fans that do the weird oiling. DD

I'm not that familiar with 41s, but the 41 lube charts also list oil the fan on them. Any insight? Did they move the fan off of the crank in 41?

J.....I was pretty sure that '41s still had the fan on the crank. Nevertheless, VanPelt's site shows '42-onward for the weird-oiling fan hub. DD

Think it does take gear oil. I have a service bulletin somewhere that calls for 90wt and it was a change from engine oil.

I use 30W non detergent oil in mine. When you take the hub apart and see how it's made it looks to me like 90W is too thick to lubricate properly. I have 12,000+ miles and no trouble.

I do believe the Ford SB did make a change for those that had seeping problems as was mentioned. I don't know if they ever changed the standard procedure though. Seepy fans were a sign of wear of the internal metal on metal journal bearings or deterioration of the flange gasket joint. New parts are available for that type of fan. Ford used them into the 8BA era for some trucks & early 49 Mercury cars. The reservoir is filled to the bearing line and any over fill drains out when it's rotated with the fill hole down. They don't really hold a lot of oil.

30-9. I would suggest that you remove the fan assembly and dismantle it to get rid of the old oil and clean it up. You have no way of draining the old oil without tearing it down. You will need two gaskets, that you can make yourself. When I opened up the fan hub from my 46, there was some gooey stuff in the housing. I cleaned, assembled and filled as per the service manual with HD30 motor oil. 600 miles so far and no problems.

Anyone have a 1940 owners manual with a lubrication chart in it? I have a copy of what is ID'd as a 1940 Deluxe chart that list engine oil for the fan. So either the chart is miss-ID'd or Ford wasn't that careful in checking the changes from year to year on their charts. Not a big deal by any means, just seemed interesting.

I have an original copy of the "1940 Service Data Handbook" which was in the glovebox of a low mileage (33,000) '40 my Dad bought from the original owner in1989. The "Lubrication and Maintenance Chart" reads the same as yours except for the heading at the top of the page. Mine reads "Mercury, Deluxe Ford V8, Ford V8 & Ford Commercial". So they printed the same information in at least two different manuals. What's interesting in my manual is that in the illustration showing component locations, there is no "C" pointing to the fan, just generator and distributor.

You posted this one on the "greasing" thread a few days ago. Isn't this one a '40? It doesn't have a greasable fan hub on it.

That is the one I'm referring to. Fan is listed under the items that use engine oil as a lubricant. I would assume they are just using a general statement that is not specific to the model year diagram. But wasn't positive it was a 40 diagram!

Just noticed it also list brake clevis pins! The only "C" I can locate on the diagram it's self is for the distributor and generator.

This may or may not be a 40 diagram based on other post.

That one is different from the one I orginally posted, so not sure what that one is from, but it does have hydraulic brakes.

Thanks Adileo!

Thanks Adileo!

Looking close at the chart that Adileo posted, it has an arrow pointing to the fan hub that indicates "V" and I think "B". At the bottom of the chart, "V"
says to remove plug and add 1oz of Hypoid Gear Oil. No mention of motor oil. If you have a reproduction manual, they may have used that one lube cart to be included on all the early Ford manuals that they reproduce regardless of the year. Some one must have a book of the service bulletin's that will show when Ford changed to gear oil from motor oil to lube the hub.

OK, thanks adileo, it must be for the 46-48 models (maybe 41-42 as well, I have no idea on those years?). The 1940s had the fan straight off of the crankshaft and wouldn't require any type of lubricant. I'm learning a lot here! Had no idea on the switch from engine oil to gear lubricant.

I think the fans that take oil are for '42-'48 cars and '42-'52 trucks. Somebody on this site should know for sure. I'm just going from memory.

Curious cars 42-48 would that be EAB? Reason I ask is my 39 has EAB heads and based on pencil test, I thought, I had a later model engine. However, my fan does not have a place for oil.

There could be any mixture of parts on the engine. Where is the fan mounted and how is it driven (belt wise)? Ford used a lot of different fan arrangements.

Fan is on crank - one belt drives pumps and fan. It’s not a big deal estout just got me thinking..I’m pretty sure it’s a EAB but..as long as it runs well and gets me where I wanna go and back, I’m happy
