Re: Pictures of unknown tranny
It looks like it could be the early Ford bolt pattern. Van Pelt said in your last post that the spline counts you gave started in '58. The trans could fit a variety of early Fords with the right solenoid and clutch disc. I think that bolt pattern goes up through '63.

Re: Pictures of unknown tranny
That transmission is a T-86 built by Warner Gear with a light duty R-10 OD. The T-86 used the stamped steel top cover and three bolt front bearing retainer, while the stronger and more desirable T-85 had a cast iron side cover and a four bolt bearing retainer. The T-85 also used a stronger R-11 OD that has four planet gears compared to the three in a R-10. The T-85 evolved into the T-10 four speed introduced in '57 for the Corvette.
Studebaker used T-86's and had the same bellhousing/trans case bolt pattern, but I don't know the spline count on a Stude input shaft. |

Re: Pictures of unknown tranny
My dad bought a new 55 ford and i managed to tear 1st gear out of it . Okay i was a teenager and never knew how to drag race , ha ha . But when we removed the trany it had that metal cover on it but the replacement he picked up never . It had the side plate that came off. So luck was with me as he said ," yeah they put a cheap made transmission in it , i think this is a better one" . I still don't know if he knew i was out trying to drag race. So , i believe that might be a 55 ford passenger car transmission.

Re: Pictures of unknown tranny
Why will it not work? Input splines? rear mount location? Overall length?

Re: Pictures of unknown tranny
When I say it wont work in my cars....I really mean without making an adapter so that the mounting ears would fit where it should. The 55 mount from front of case to center hole of mounting ears is 12 1/2 "....the transmission in question has a measurement of 13 1/8 ".As for the Tbird, the govenor on the transmission in question is facing downward which will be in the way due to the frame. On the 56 T-Bird the govenor faces up.....J

Re: Pictures of unknown tranny
Have you looked at reversing the rear mount? In some cars the mounting holes are offset so turning the mount so it faces the opposite direction makes it right for the OD trans.

Re: Pictures of unknown tranny
Thanks for that tip of reversing the mount....never thought of doing that....I will look into that for my 55 Ford....still no good for the T-Bird due to the govenor downward position..thanks again...John

Re: Pictures of unknown tranny
The Ford narrow bolt pattern went through 1964 based on the 3 speed non o/d trans I took out of a wrecked '64 Comet with a 289 to install in my '65 Falcon which had both the narrow and wide bolt pattern back in HS. The governor and solenoid should be 12 volt which should be desirable to someone wanting to put an o/d unit in a hot rod converted to 12 volt - assuming that the 12 volt units would interchange with 6 volt units. Mac VanPelt would know about that.

Re: Pictures of unknown tranny
Ford used both the T86 R10 and the T85 R11 in the late 50s. The T86 was used mostly for lighter duty applications but you could see them on 223 6-cylinder and Y-block V8s. That one has the Ford/BW narrow bolt pattern. The later T85N R11 had both patterns on it. I think they came along in 1965 and lasted through 1972 for F100 pickups mostly. Cars were getting out of the electric overdrive era after 1964.
