Default Gas Tank to Belt Rail Bolts - 29 Coupe

Question on the number of bolts used to secure gas tank to belt rail on a 29 coupe.

In the Ford Parts Price List book and in the vendors catalogs they list 8. I noticed that there are actually 10 holes in the belt rail and 10 in the tank, but the one that is furthest from the center on each side (in the door post area) would be very difficult to install. So I am assuming that no bolts were put in these difficult to get to holes on each end. Am I correct?

Thanks - Hunter

Hello - I just removed my tank on my '29 Coupe to clean it out and seal it. I think the two holes you're referring to are on the ends of the tank? If thats the case, mine had bolts here and these outer holes are where it bolts to the windshield/door posts. They are a bugger to get to but it can be done. Greg

Rowdy and Colorado Gregg,

Thanks for the info. I wonder why the parts list and vendors list 8 instead of the 10 required?

Here's a picture of the 5 bolts and clamps on each side of my 9-27-28 Phaeton. Notice the wire supports on each of the end clamps, as well as the fold to hold the kick panel.

I would think your 29 Coupe would look the same.

Tom,

This is a great picture and helps me with the placement of the clamps and brackets (thanks for previous pictures too!) but I am talking about the bolts that connect the dash rail to the gas tank. From the picture I can't see if 8 or 10 were used.

Thanks for your help - Hunter

I think that the 2 end bolts are different than the other eight. They were on mine but I also had to use three different sized wrenches to get everything apart. (mine had a missmash of bolts & nuts)

My coupe that was built 9/23/29, does not have the wire supports. What would these wire supports be for? Cowl lights? Let me know if you can.
Thanks, Greg

Not to say that coupes should necessarily be the same, but on the roadsters and phaetons the 2 end holes on the gastank were definately used. The bolts go thru these holes in the gastank and thread into a D-shaped clinch nut on the bracket attached to the doorpost. The bolts can typically be very hard to get out - the bolts break off or the head gets stripped, threads of the clinch nuts get stripped, etc. and probably as often as not the clinch nuts just get drilled out rather than replaced.

The loops were for the wire running to the electric wiper, even though my Phaeton has a hand wiper.
Doesn't your car have the front one to hold the kick panel?

My gas tank to firewall on the engine side has 8 bolts and nuts.
Each end of the gas tank to cowl has 5 bolts and nuts as pictured.
Under the dash rail the gas tank has 10 bolts.

Here is the hole of the bolt that I am referring up. It was my understanding that the bolts on the dash rail come in from the top and the nut is on the bottom. Following this pattern it would require that the last bolt on each end come in from the back which is very difficult to do and it does not seem that Ford would make it this difficult.

If the bolts were to be installed from the bottom and the nuts on top of the dash rail then it would be easy to get the final bolt in and slip the nut in from the back.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

On my 9-27-28 Phaeton I have all 10 hex bolt heads showing.

On my 2-23-29 Tudor I have 8 hex nuts showing and each end has a small square bolt head showing.

I'm pretty sure neither tank has ever been out of the car as they both have the remians of the original welt and both are unrestored.

Tom,

Thanks again. Just a quick follow up, when you say nuts showing I assume you mean looking at it from under the dash. That is the nuts are closest to the floor. Correect?

CORRECT. It's just as I see it looking up under the dash rail.

My 9-23-29 coupe did not have any of these loops. I do have an electric wiper but the wires run up the drivers side, not the passenger side. Is this correct? I have a complete new interior from Lebaron Bonney but have yet to install it. The car never had any interior so I'm not sure how the kick panel attaches. Does it attach at the top to this loop? How do the kick panels install?
Thanks for the input!
Greg
